This project began as an attempt to create a chronological, easy-to-read
reference list of 70-millimeter presentations in Salt Lake City, Utah,
but, as with many large-scale research projects, the article evolved
into what includes not just genuine 70mm but also the 70mm blow-ups,
large-format three-panel processes CineMiracle and Cinerama, and
roadshows (i.e. movies shown on a reserved-seat basis with advanced
pricing and limited, scheduled showtimes). In the case of the roadshows,
these were not limited to titles shot in and/or exhibited in a
large-format process (though it continues to be a popular misconception
that roadshows and large-format exhibition were mutually exclusive). As
well, an overview has been included of the SLC area cinemas in which the
subject films played. |

Part 1: The Cinemas |

by Thomas HauerslevCentre: A 1,600-seat theater that opened in 1937, with the seating reduced to about 1,200 when 70mm projection (Bauer U2) was installed in 1960. During the 70mm era, the operators were Intermountain (1960-1970), ABC Intermountain (1970-1974), Plitt (1974-1987) and Cineplex Odeon (1987-1989). A Dolby CP100 was installed in 1977. Century 21: Located in South Salt Lake and operated by Syufy Enterprises (AKA Century Theatres) from 1967 to 1998. The Century 21 originally had 985 seats and 70mm capability (Century JJ). A duplicate building, Century 22, opened in 1969. In 1972, the Century 22 was divided into two auditoriums with one auditorium retaining the Century 22 name and the other becoming Century 23, both 70mm capable. In 1977, the original Century 21 was divided into three auditoriums, the largest of which retained 70mm capability. At this point, the five-screen complex was identified by the auditorium designations 21 through 25. An annex with four small auditoriums was added in 1990. Also known as Century 5, Century 9 and Century Complex. A Dolby CP100 was installed by 1979, with additional units (including at least one CP200) installed during subsequent years. Cottonwood Mall: Located in the Salt Lake City suburb of Holladay and operated by National General (1968-1973), Mann (1973-1992) and Carmike (1992-2002). Mann split the original 850-seat theater in late 1976, with what became a 550-seat auditorium equipped for 70mm (DP70). An annex with two additional auditoriums was added in early 1977, making the theater a four-plex. A Dolby CP100 was installed in 1983. Creekside: A three-screen complex operated by Mann (1982-1992) and Carmike (1992-2000). Built as an extension of the Cottonwood Mall theater located a quarter-mile away. One 350-seat screen was equipped for 70mm. A Dolby CP100 or CP200 was installed by 1989 (exact installation date undetermined). Also known as Mann 5-6-7, Cottonwood 5-6-7 and Carmike 5-6-7. Crossroads: A three-screen complex operated by Plitt (1980-1987) and Cineplex Odeon (1987-2000). The complex’s largest auditorium (558 seats) was equipped for 70mm (make/model undetermined) and Dolby (CP100) upon its opening in 1980. Holladay Center: Located in Holladay. A six-screen multiplex opened by Cineplex Odeon in 1988. The largest auditorium in the complex was equipped for 70mm (Simplex/Ballantyne) and Dolby (CP200) upon its opening. Midvalley: Located in Taylorsville. A six-screen multiplex operated by Plitt (1983-1987) and Cineplex Odeon (1987-2000). The largest auditorium in the complex (486 seats) was equipped for 70mm (make/model undetermined) and Dolby (CP100) upon its opening in 1983. Park-Vu Drive-In: A drive-in—believe it or not—equipped for 70mm projection (a DP70 installed in 1960). It was operated by Sero Amusements (1950-1977). Regency: An 800-seat single-screen theater operated by ABC Intermountain (1972-74), Plitt (1974-1987) and Cineplex Odeon (1987-1990). Seventy-millimeter projection (DP70) was installed upon its opening in 1972, and a Dolby CP100 was installed in 1976. South East: A single-screen theater built in 1936 with 70mm projection installed in 1962 (make/model undetermined). During the 70mm era, it was operated by Fox Inter-Mountain (1962-1966), National General (1966-1973) and Mann (1973-1976). Studio: A single-screen theater operated by Intermountain (1965-1970), ABC Intermountain (1970-1974) and Plitt (1974-1983). The 70mm projection capability is unconfirmed; conflicting information exists on whether or not the venue was ever equipped for 70mm presentations. Also known as Stadium and Utah III. |

 Thanksgiving Point: An 8-screen, stadium-seating complex located in
Lehi. All eight screens were equipped with DP70s. Westates opened the
complex in 2003. Larry H. Miller took over in 2005. AKA Megaplex 8 at
Thanksgiving Point.Trolley Corners: A three-screen complex operated by Trolley Theaters (1977-1984), Plitt (1984-1987) and Cineplex Odeon (1987-2000). The complex’s largest auditorium (775 seats) was equipped for 70mm (Century JJ) and Dolby (CP100) upon its opening in 1977. Uptown: A single-screen theater built in 1911 and previously known as the Empress and Paramount. Seventy-millimeter projection was installed in 1966 (DP70). During the 70mm era, it was operated by National General (1966-1971). Utah: Originally a single-screener built in 1919, and called the Pantages and later the Orpheum, the 1,765-seat Utah was split horizontally in 1968 resulting in an 807-seat auditorium on the lower level (Utah I) and a 624-seat auditorium in the former balcony (Utah II). Seventy-millimeter projection was installed in 1965 (Cinemeccanica Victoria 8), with another 70mm projection system installed upon the twinning. The Utah II was also known as the Utah Penthouse. During the 70mm era, this was operated by Intermountain (1965-1970), ABC Intermountain (1970-1974), Plitt (1974-1987) and Cineplex Odeon (1987-1988). Utah Penthouse: See Utah (above). Villa: The 1,000-seat single-screen theater was built in 1949. Seventy-millimeter projection (DP70 and, later, Century JJ) was installed in 1958. CineMiracle was installed in 1960. Cinerama was installed in 1961. A Dolby CP100 was installed in 1978. During the large-format era, this was operated by Fox Inter-Mountain (1958-1966), National General (1966-1973), Mann (1973-1992) and Carmike (1992-2003). On a related note, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ran the Legacy Theater, which was equipped for 70mm presentations, and ran the 70mm production “Legacy” from 1993-2000 and replaced it with the 70mm production "The Testament of One Fold and One Shepherd" in 2000. In other parts of Utah, 70mm-equipped theaters included the SCERA (an acronym for Sharon’s Cultural, Educational, Recreational Association) in Orem, which during 1990 played 70mm Utah exclusives of “Dick Tracy” and “The Ten Commandments”); the Cinedome 70 in Riverdale; the Wilshire in South Ogden; the Stadium 8 in Providence; and in St. George the Stadium 8 had two screens 70mm-equipped (DP70s) and the Stadium 10 had four screens 70mm equipped (Century JJs). It should also be noted that Salt Lake City has had some IMAX and Iwerks large-format special venue theaters, including the Clark Planetarium, the Megaplex 17 at Jordan Commons in Sandy, and the North American Museum of Ancient Life at Thanksgiving Point in Lehi. The special venue presentations, however, have not been included in this article (though they might be added in a future revision). |

Part 2: The Engagements |
|
 Most of the titles cited below were presented in 70-millimeter and with
some flavor of six-track stereophonic sound. Movies shot and presented
in the tri-panel Cinerama and CineMiracle processes are cited as
<Cinerama> and <CineMiracle>. The Cinerama-branded 70mm presentations
during the 1963-69 period are cited as <“Cinerama”>.Of the English-language movies originated in 65mm, effort has been made to cite every one of them regardless of whether or not they were screened from a large-format print (with the known 35mm presentations being noted as such). Of the hundreds of 35mm-lensed movies that were blown-up to 70mm for selected theaters, only those that played the Salt Lake City market in 70mm are cited in this work. The “roadshows” (i.e. reserved-seat and/or reserved-performance engagements) have been listed in bold. Many of the roadshows were shot and/or shown in 35mm (rather than in 70mm) and effort has been made to identify these with a <35mm> notation. An asterisk follows any title for which the projection process could not be determined or was vaguely or ambiguously addressed in promotional material. Movies originated in 35mm (horizontal) large-aperture formats such as VistaVision and Technirama have not been included, except for those few cases where such a film was exhibited in 70mm and/or with a reserved-seat policy. As well, a few movies shot in 35mm for which there is no record of any 70mm prints ever having been made do appear on the list when exhibited with a reserved-seat policy and featured a stereophonic soundtrack.
