Cinestage 34mm in London
When "Around the World in 80 Days" originally opened in
London, England in 1957, it was not in 70mm Todd-AO, but in
the 35mm Cinestage format. The Cinestage format was a
reduction from the 65mm 24 fps. negative with 6-track sound
coming from a separate 35mm dubber. |

Interview with Asger Bak
By Thomas Hauerslev
It is Asgers
firm belief that cinemas will still be around in 10 years.
"Celluloid may have been replaced with some form of digital
projection, but Joe Customer will still need a place to see
his films, bring his wife and have a few beers. |
"A Year Along the Abandoned
Road" - One Year in 12 Minutes and 70mm
By Morten Skallerud
The story of the making of "A Year Along the Abandoned Road" contains a lot
of technical innovation. It also contains a different film
language, and five Norwegians who fought sub-Arctic nature
in order to turn a "crazy" idea into a 12-minute, 70mm film. |

Ken Annakin Interview By Thomas Hauerslev
From what I remember Christopher Challis the Director of Photography spent about 3 or 4 days at the Todd-AO headquarters, and was told all the things he could and could not achieve with their 70mm cameras. But we never had a technical supervisor come out on location. If we had any queries we could call the Todd-AO experts at any time. |
Ken
Annakin. Director in Todd-AO and Ultra Panavision 70
Von Thomas Hauerslev
Doch was die
John Vorisek
By David Coles
Those familiar with the
technical credits of the Cinerama travel films will recognized the name
Richard Vorisek. He did post-production sound mixing on those five
titles. Richard's brother John had an unaccredited, but significant,
involvement with the original production, "This is Cinerama". |

Louis
deRochemont, III
By David Page
Louis was kind enough to
inscribe a "Windjammer" poster for me with the words...'To David Page
who has become part of the cruise'. Then, at the end of the weekend, I
drove Louis back to Heathrow where, at the departure gate, we bade
farewell. As he went through the gate, with a tear in his eye, he
turned, waved and returned home. |

Todd-AO
The Show of Shows
By John Belton
"Oklahoma!" was a hot ticket; even Cecil B. DeMille had trouble getting seats during the first few weeks of its run.
Todd-AO was about showman-ship. It provided high quality
subject matter, lavish production values, big screen
entertainment, and six-track stereo magnetic sound. |
