"Unexpected Roadshow"
Panoramic Film Presentation in Banská Bystrica, Slovak Republik, 2021 poster
This
is the second year that many 70mm festivals have not taken place due to
COVID-19. Travelling to festivals that take place is also a problem. So I
took advantage of one of the few options and went to neighboring Slovakia
for 6 Panoramic Film Presentation in
Banská Bystrica. It is the only 70mm
film festival to be held in the open air in the open air Amphitheater. By
default, there are two films, on Friday and Saturday, one new and one older.
This year, they have prepared a "Sunday with Quentin" cycle for visitors
throughout the summer. And since Quentin Tarantino made a significant impact
on 70mm fans with "The Hateful Eight", the organizers tried to get the film.
It worked and the show was one evening longer.

The weather was also good for the organizers. The beginning of summer with
the coming high temperatures and clear starry sky is ideal for such a tour.
The first evening we had the opportunity to see Christhoper Nolan's latest
film "Tenet". The image quality was beautiful to see on the large 32x15m
screen. Filming on the IMAX format ensured a minimum grain of image and
sharpness, which is simply not visible. The unreal experience in the middle
of the film was disrupted by a loss of sound. The XD10 DTS player
overheated, but after a while of working, it was possible to use the older
DTS 6D and finish the film.
The second evening featured Hal Ashby's 1982 film "Let's Spend the Night
Together." The film copy was like new, beautiful colors without damage and
with magnetic sound recording. Although the amphitheater does not have
effect speakers, the 5-channel sound from the screen was completely
different from the mix on digital media. Once again, it has been confirmed
that magnetic sound recording has not lost its quality even after so many
years and still has its justification. It is also emotionally different from
modern digital sound. Fans of the Rolling Stones discussed the film in the
Amphitheater area. And after the end of the film, the organizers prepared a
short 70mm sample from the film Exorcist. The fragment was from the original
period copy with color degradation. However, the film will be projected from
a new 35mm full-color copy.
This year the number of foreign visitors was minimal. But there were many
opportunities to spend a day in Banská Bystrica. The show took place at a
time when there were "Cultural Days of the City BB" in the city, about 40
different cultural events.

Example
of 70mm film - note the magnetic soundtracks on
Hal Ashby's 1982 film "Let's Spend the Night
Together."
The greatest experience was ready for the last evening. And the evening was
really long and demanding. Quentin Tarantino's film
"The Hateful Eight" was
screened. It is significant for two reasons. Firstly, he launched a new
current wave of 70mm films, and secondly, he was shot on the little-used
Ultra
Panavision 70 format. The organizers did it the way the director
intended. A full-fledged Roadshow with a printed program, personal preface,
introductory music and also a 15-minute break in the Ultra Panavision 70
format and Datasat sound. The applause for the film was sufficient
satisfaction and confirmation that such actions make sense.

Few of the visitors probably noticed the Slovak subtitles, which are
projected externally from a digital projector. This is because the automatic
subtitling system, which was developed directly by Banská Bystrica and has
been used for several years in our country in Krnov, is so good that no one
even registers it.
More than 400 spectators took part in the show. I hope that they liked the
70mm format and maybe we will see some of them at shows in
Krnov,
Karlsruhe,
Oslo,
Copenhagen,
Bradford, etc. I'm really looking forward to it.
