Welcome to the sixteenth edition of the
Todd-AO Festival
at the amazing
Schauburg Cinerama in Karlsruhe. We still feel our festival is the
"Cannes Film Festival of 7OMM", where YOU - the audience - is the guest
of honor, and where everything is shown on 70mm film, on historically
correct 70mm projectors. After an inconvenient three year break,
including two years of Covid 19 restrictions - we are re-starting the
annual Todd-AO Festival, and are very happy to see you again. For three
days we celebrate CINEMA and everything that is WIDE, CURVED and shot on
65mm FILM. "Moving Pictures" as they were intended to be seen: In the
splendour of 70mm. We warmly welcome you back!
70mm remains as popular as ever for a few contemporary artists. Recently
released was
"NOPE" by Director Jordan Peele and filmed entirely with IMAX
65mm and Panavision System 65 cameras. "NOPE" was given a digital only
release - like
"Samsara"
in 2012. 70mm is "not dead yet" and in Karlsruhe we keep the 7OMM flag
waving. For 2022 we present a collection of old vintage classics and
some rarely seen 70mm productions. Embracing the present we are
delighted to continue our 70mm relationship with Director Paul Thomas
Anderson and present his latest
"Licorice
Pizza" in spectacular Panavision 70. New 70mm prints of
"Airport" and "Spartacus" from Universal Pictures are also
two highlights of the festival. While we wait for Christopher Nolan's
next 70mm feature
"Oppenheimer" in 2023, we invite you to see his 2020 blockbuster
"Tenet". Between
"Pizza" and "Tenet" you can also enjoy the rarely seen
adventure "Hercules" in “Horizon Spanning Technirama”
where problems are solved through muscle power. "Exodus" which is
one of the first Super Panavision 70 productions, and finally "Onkel
Tom's Hütte", which we show in tribute to German Director of
Photography
Herr Heinz Hölscher, who passed away in 2021. Three original
vintage premiere 70mm prints, all of which are shown in German versions.
The Todd-AO Festival is not complete without rare short films and
lectures. Thanks to Julian Antos and the Chicago Film Society we are
been able to host the European Premiere of
"Here's Chicago!
The City of Dreams". We are equally delighted to welcome Herr
Marcel Kaup, who will talk about his fathers work with Cinema 180 in
Germany.
Pronounced "Cinema
One-Eighty",
the popular process was the most honest "First
Person" thrill-ride
you could imagine on 70mm film.
After his talk, some Cinema 180 films to
be shown on the curve. As the closing act of the 16th Todd-AO Festival,
we have invited David Strohmaier and Randy Gitch to present
"The
Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm". We have compromised our
"70mm only" policy with this exception, honoring the significance of
CINERAMA, and the monumental work which has been done to restore it. In
1968 the Schauburg was converted into a CINERAMA theatre, and we are
delighted to be able to present "The Wonderful World of the Brothers
Grimm" "in CINERAMA" on the curved screen.
I think we can assure a splendid weekend in the company of Kirk Douglas,
Paul Newman, Fay Spain, Herbert Lom, Eva Marie Saint, Alana Haim, John
David Washington, Elizabeth Debicky, Gal Gadot, Russ Tamblyn, Karl
Boehm, Dean Martin, Helen Hayes, George Kennedy and many, many more. All
films in produced and shown in large format processes like Cinerama,
Super Technirama 70, MCS Superpanorama 70, Todd-AO, IMAX, Panavision
System 65 and Cinema 180 to name most of them.
Cinema moves forward with modern presentation technology, with seats
that moves, pictures on the walls, 3D, IMAX, 4DX, smells, and much more.
They all promise you an immersive experience, but please remember how:
• CINERAMA "Puts you IN the picture"
• Todd-AO gave you "New Sight. New Sound. New Screen"
• VistaVision was "Motion Picture High Fidelity"
• CinemaScope was the "Modern Miracle you see Without Glasses"
• CinemaScope-55 gave you "More than your eyes have ever seen"
• Camera 65 was the "Window of the World"
• Dimension 150 was "The New Dimension in Motion Pictures"
The Todd-AO Festival faithfully attempts to present the films "the old
fashioned" way, with an introductory ceremonial gong at the beginning,
curtains opening to reveal the screen, and with authentic 70mm film
prints, and we hope you will join us for yet another a BIG weekend, on
the BIG curved screen.
