Under the artistic direction of Gary Prebula, the mission of the Wide Screen
Festival is to educate the public and industry professionals about the
special challenges and rewards of the wide screen format and to advocate the
protection, preservation and presentation of this very special segment of
the 20th century’s most influential art form. The Executive Committee has
approved the film programming for this year’s festival which will run for
three weekends, October 31 – November 16, with an advance screening on
Sunday September 21, 1997. The entire program is subject to change based on
acceptable print availability. Likewise, it is presently unclear how many of
the films will be available in high quality 70mm prints. In addition to the
film screenings, we will present several education and preservation
programs. The programs we have scheduled are: • A panel discussion on cinematography, presented by the International Photographers Guild. • A program on editing presented by the Motion Picture Editors Guild. • A program on production design that will be developed by Gene Allen, Jim Bissell and John Muto. • A screening of the film about preservation “Race to Save 100 Years” by Turner Entertainment Co. The screening will be accompanied by a panel discussion led by Richard P. May, Vice President, Film Preservation for Warner Brothers. There will be two or three programs in addition to those listed above, as well as a gallery-style exhibition of artwork and equipment significant to the history and development of Wide Screen filmmaking.
