Requiring
special projector lenses sent to theaters to capture the film’s visual
impact, Quentin Tarantino’s new Western, THE HATEFUL EIGHT, was shot in
Ultra Panavision 70 - the first such production since KHARTOUM. Other films
shot in Ultra Panavision include the star-studded comedy IT’S A MAD, MAD,
MAD, MAD WORLD, which proved as side-splitting as it was screen-stretching,
and the timeless classic BEN HUR, whose famous chariot race used the edges
of the image to keep audiences on the edge of their seats.
Recent releases like Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi adventure INTERSTELLAR and
Paul Thomas Anderson’s philosophical character study THE MASTER underline
the continuing appeal of widescreen formats to filmmakers. While 70mm films
are rare these days, during the medium’s Golden Age from 1955 to 1970, there
were nearly 60 Hollywood features shot in large-format (with many more
released in special engagements as 35mm-to-70mm blow-ups). And as with
Tarantino, Nolan and Anderson, the possibilities offered by widescreen
vistas were put to very diverse uses. Cast-of-thousands historical sagas
were naturals for such epic presentations, and multi-Oscar winners LAWRENCE
OF ARABIA still looks stunning in 70mm. Master of suspense Alfred Hitchcock
reached what many consider the summit of his career with San Francisco-set
mystery VERTIGO. And with SILVERADO, writer-director Lawrence Kasdan dusted
off the Western for a 1980s audience (SILVERADO was shot on Super 35mm but
is presented in 70mm; BEN HUR will be presented in DCP.
Recent releases like Quentin Tarantino’s THE HATEFUL EIGHT underline the
continuing appeal of widescreen formats to filmmakers. Join us for two
weekends of some of our favorite 70mm and Ultra Panavision-shot films,
ranging from the medium’s 1955-to-1970 Golden Age (LAWRENCE OF ARABIA) to
more contemporary epics such as THE MASTER.
