Hello, my name is Tamir. I'm from Chicago, IL. I hope to own a few
theaters someday. The studies from the 65/70MM workshop have gotten my
attention. I've heard of the format before, but because of my young age
(18), I never got the chance to see a movie in 70MM outside of IMAX. My
brothers saw 70MM blowups of “Aliens”, “Indiana Jones & The Last
Crusade”, and “Lethal Weapon 2”. They were impressed with those blowups,
and they weren't shot in 5 perf 65MM. I've seen some good digital
presentations, but they've been on screens that get smaller (yeah,
smaller) for presentation. And that's why people are leaning towards
their home theater systems. There's an AMC theater opening in Tukwilla,
WA that will feature all digital screens. I don't think that's a good
thing because come 2/17/09, TV will be all-digital. So why would someone
want to pay $11.00 to see something they already have on their TV
screen? Knowing AMC, they'll have top-down masking where the screen gets
smaller. That is not good. As a future exhibitor, my goal will be to
bring back the lost art of showmanship, and the return of wide screens.
I would like to know how much it would cost to install 70MM equipment on
large screens that don't already have it? Here in the Chicago area,
there are ten theaters with screens that might benefit from the
equipment to play 70MM revivals, and maybe future 65MM/ wide 35MM
blowups.
Here's the list:
Kerasotes Webster Place. Opened in 1988 by M&R. It had the equipment
back then, not sure if they still have it. It was remodeled last winter.
The Lake Theater.
Located in Oak Park, IL. Ran by Classic Cinemas, an independent chain.
Their largest screen could be retrofitted for 70MM.
The Tivoli. Located in Downers Grove, IL. Also ran by CC. This is a
single screen movie place with over 1,000 seats. They play near 2nd run
films.
The
Pickwick. Another movie palace.
Their main
auditorium
Showplace 12 @ Golf Mill Center. Operated by Kerasotes. No pics of this
place. Auditoriums 1&7 feature screens that are 60ft wide, and three
stories tall. They're dubbed "the big units".
AMC-Loews Gardens at Old Orchard 7-13. Opened by Cineplex Odeon in
1994. It had 70MM projection when it opened. Not sure if they still have
it.
AMC-Loews Country Club Hills. Their largest auditorium seats 676, and
the screen may be over 60ft or more wide.
Marcus Addison. Their largest screen used to be an IMAX. Now it's called
the Superscreen.
Marcus Elgin Fox. They have the Ultra Screen.
Kerasotes Showplace 12 @ Bolingbrook. Their largest screen (#4 I think)
is pretty big, and would be ripe for a 70MM retrofit.
I hope this list will be helpful in anyway possible. The CEO of Classic
Cinemas might be open to showing 70MM DTS revivals. I will contact them
& tell them about the 65/70MM workshop. I also think that if it's
possible, the workshop could contact directors with clout like Steven
Spielberg, Chris Nolan, Peter Jackson, Martin Scorsese, and even Quentin
Tarantino & Jon Favreau about shooting upcoming projects with 70MM DTS
in mind. If they saw demos of this revived format, one, if not all of
them will do it. While I want to see a new 65MM production blown up to
70 DTS, how would wide horizontal 35MM look blown up to 70MM? Well, I
wish I had something else to contribute to the workshop. But when I
start building theaters, I will have the equipment installed. The
workshop has my support.
Sincerely,
Tamir Sharif. (future exhibitor, fan of the widescreen)

Mr. Lamarca,
It's Tamir again. I'm writing again because I've come up with an idea on
how to get young people interested in the 65/70MM format. And here it
goes
How about a 70MM myspace page? Movie studios have been marketing films
via myspace to get audiences (mainly young) interested in their movies.
For example, 20th Century Fox put up a myspace page for Live Free or Die
Hard, and it worked.
On the page, they had a trailer, some scenes, contests to see the movie
etc... Even music composers/singers have myspace pages with samples of
music, and it works. My proposed 70MM myspace page would include a
history of the format, why it works over digital, how it could help Blu-ray,
pictures of large curved & flat screens compaired to the small DLP
screens, economics on installing 35/70 projection compaired to DLP, and
contests to see 70MM upclose. I would also include a proposal (or shout
out, as my generation would say) to filmmakers to shoot upcoming big
movies in 65MM for 70MM DTS.
One upcoming movie I would love to see shot in 65MM is the adaptation of
Halo, which will be produced by Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings, King
Kong). If that movie were to be shot on 65MM stock, then younger people
will be blown away.
I've also read that some scenes in the upcoming thriller, The
International, was shot on the
ARRI 765. I would also send a proposal to
the filmmakers to have
70mm DTS screenings of that movie in 1-2 theaters
per state/city. Los Angeles has the theaters, New York's got them,
Utah's got them, and I'm trying to get Chicago to have them too.
Although that would be a blow-up release, it would still have more
clarity than the IMAX DMR's as the workshop has shown on
this page
Well, I hope you & the team like my proposal.
Sincerely,
Tamir Sharif. (future exhibitor, fan of the widescreen)
