Being a member of The International 70mm Association for the past two years
I address myself to you with a few questions after I have introduced myself.
Liga 68 is a company involved in the exhibition of art house movies since
1968. As a film club we have showed quality movies for students in 900-seat
cinemas from 1968 to 1978. For instance we ran, in 70mm, "War and
Peace" by Bundarchuck and we had the Dutch premiere of
"2001: A Space Odyssey" in 70mm
at Cinema Palace in Groningen in the early seventies.
Since 1978 we have had our own cinema which is very small and since 1991 we
have organized the annual Film Festival Groningen as well, which
traditionally holds its opening night at The Camera cinema, built in 1960
with the perfect shape for 70mm screening.
We subsequently showed "Lawrence Of Arabia",
"Spartacus", "Apocalypse Now",
"The Fall Of The Roman Empire", "War And Peace" and are now heading for a
renewed screening of "2001: A Space Odyssey" in 1996, in combination with
the only Dutch 70mm picture ever, "Sky Over Holland" by John Fernhout (which
contains scenes of the famous Groningen May-fair). We are, however, also
interested in screening the first 70mm footage ever made by Henry Regatta,
as mentioned in The 70mm Newsletter. We would be very pleased if you would
tell us anything about the where-abouts of this footage. In the mean-time we
will of course continue our own research.
Last year we found out during the research process, that the "War And Peace"
70mm prints are like blessings to count. Eventually we found five (and a
half print) of them. One American version at an anonymous source in the USA,
one good print at Brian Sammes in London with one reel missing, one print at
Mosfilm in Moscow (a directors cut by Bondarchuck himself without
subtitles), a half print (and flamable negative of the entire film) at
Gosfilmofond in Moscow and two prints in Belgium, one with a reel with bad
sound. Nevertheless we made from the two Belgian prints one for a beautiful
projection during the opening of our festival.
I believe we are the only film festival in the world which opens every year
with a 70mm screening. As you will understand, we want to continue our 70mm
tradition and we are eager for news about 70mm prints. On the other hand, we
will keep you informed about our activities. Eagerly awaiting your reply.
With kind regards Liga 68, Frans Westra.
