No less than three large format films will be
presented in Denmark this summer - two films in 70mm and one in 4K digital.
"Samsara" will premiere in 50 Danish cinemas in a mix of 2K and 4K
digital formats on 28 August 2013. Since Denmark only has about 150 cinemas,
it is a wide release, although just for one day only. Some cinemas will
continue to play "Samsara" after August 28th, and it will be
interesting to see how well the film will play in Denmark.
Mr. Orla Nielsen
in Aalborg will play "Samsara" in Dolby Surround 7.1 and 4K in his 90
seat "Biffen" theatre. It will be a high-impact experience to see the film
on his 10 meter curved screen, with JBL speakers and QSC amplifiers. You
will not find a better cinema in which to see "Samsara"!
Another spectacular one-off large format showing takes place in Helsingør,
home of Kronborg Castle, where Shakespeare's play "Hamlet" is set. Kenneth
Branagh's uncut 4-hour 70mm version of his masterpiece
"Hamlet" will
be shown on Saturday 10th August at 21:00. Get your tickets
here!
The 70mm
print will be projected using a
Philips DP75, with unprecedented resolution
and picture steadiness. Mr. Jesper Meng is providing the screen and sound
equipment. Jesper has many years of experience doing open-air shows in
Denmark, and every summer his equipment is used all over the country. Orla
Nielsen will project the film himself, being no stranger to open-air 70mm
shows, having done it previously in
Karen Blixen's backyard for "Out of
Africa" some years ago. He has also shown the 70mm version of
"Baraka" in a
swim bath in Copenhagen on a previous occasion.
"Hamlet" will be played in full six-track Dolby Stereo SR with split
surrounds.
Finally, "Baraka" will return in 70mm to Denmark for a handful of
shows at Biffen, Aalborg. To book-end the premiere of "Samsara", Orla
has imported a new 70mm print of "Baraka" for showing in August and
September on his curved screen. "Baraka" will be shown on his
award-winning DP70
Todd-AO projector and a Kinoton ST-270 platter system in
blazing six-track Dolby Stereo SR with split surrounds.
These 70mm screenings are a unique opportunity to come and see the
difference between the current digital standard of 4K and the power and
glory of full double-width 70mm film!

"The glory of 70mm is the sharpness of the images it offers. With 70mm,
we get a chance to go from what is essentially a personal, domestic story
about a family and its' problems to the epic dimension that reflects the
effects of those problems on the nation. We can go from the very intimate
events in the court to the plains of northern Europe and see Fortinbras for
the opportunistic leader he was, ready to invade with thousands of soldiers.
70mm is able to give that tremendous sweep so you feel the impact of the
story, but it also has an incredible delicate touch, too."
It was Kenneth Branagh's ambition to film the entire play of Shakespeare's
"Hamlet", and he says:
"The film, like the play, will have
something for everyone. It is a ghost story, a thriller, an action-packed
murder mystery and a great tragedy that is profoundly moving. It is also
extremely witty and I hope it will be thoroughly entertaining".
