The newly remastered “Holiday In Spain” 1960 recently screened at the 17th annual Malaga Film Festival on March 26th to a sold out house. The complete Cinerama version of the 1960 film produced by Michael Todd Jr. was long considered lost for many years by film historians.

Originally it was shown in Smell-o-Vision as “Scent of Mystery”, a relatively unsuccessful venture. Then Cinerama acquired it from Todd in the early 1960s and re-cut it dropping about 14 minutes for a Cinerama release as “Holiday In Spain”. Unfortunately the original “Scent of Mystery” version no longer exists.

Two years ago Dave Strohmaier and John Sittig decided to pull all of the available film elements from the Cinerama vaults, both 65mm negative and print materials for the title to see if it was possible to reconstruct the “Holiday In Spain” version. After about 5 months of intensive digital clean up and reconstruction work the completed “Holiday In Spain” was ready for the 60th anniversary of Cinerama at the Cinerama Dome in the fall of 2012.

Upon hearing that this rare film, which was largely filmed in Malaga had been reconstructed and re-mastered, Festival director Juan Antonio Vigar and local newspaperman and film historian, Francisco Grinan contacted David Strohmaier about the possibility of showing the film at this years festivities. Dave and his wife, Carin-Anne Strohmaier flew to Malaga several days before the screening to present the film for Cinerama and to do a short video on the many locations used in the area that could be used as extras for the eventual Blu-ray and DVD release. The showing was a resounding success as many Malaga locals were curious to see the film, which they had only heard about for many years and which featured Liz Taylor in an unbilled cameo role. Apparently Liz Taylor and then husband Eddie Fisher had created quite a local stir when the filming took place in Malaga in the summer of 1959.
