It is particularly poignant to be writing this obituary shortly after the
Schauburg Todd AO Festival
and on the eve of the
Bradford Wide
Screen Festival.
For it was in Bradford that my friendship with Brian began and thereafter
developed in Karlsruhe.
Over the years, our friendship grew, extending to my wife Margaret. Year
after year, the three of us would spontaneously form a group and in doing so
we would greatly enhance our mutual enjoyment of the 70mm and Cinerama
classics on offer through a free exchange of impressions and views.
We were looking forward to our reunion with Brian and were deeply shocked
and saddened by the tragic news from Dublin. Brian achieved much in his
tragically short life. He was a passionate advocate for film, at a time when
film exhibition was becoming increasingly rare, less valued and appreciated.
A co founder of the 70mm
workshop, his scholarship and research made a considerable contribution
to our knowledge of the subject, bringing about a revival of interest in
70mm; with festivals
dedicated to the format springing up around the world. New 70mm films are in
production or are about to be released. The climate had to be more
favourable to make it happen. It took learning, dedication and advocacy to
bring this climate about. He wrote many articles on the subject. One in
particular, is outstanding and should be read by anyone with a serious
interest in this, the most precious of mediums. I leave
the last word
to Brian.
