The Schauburg Cinerama in Karlsruhe will get a new Harkness Perlux Type 140 screen installed early in September 2015.

"The current screen was 9 year old and we needed to replace it. Since we can take the screen aside and use the back stage for live performances too, wear and tear was starting to show on our screen.

In fact, we have already taken the old screen down to inspect the speaker systems. We have 5 stage channels of ALCON type CR4 speakers. We installed them in 2010, and have been very happy about their performance."

-, says Herbert Born, daily manager of the Schauburg

The Schauburg, opened in 1929 and the cinema’s decor has remained essentially the same since a major refurbishment in 1968, when Cinerama Germany took it over to premiere "2OO1: A Space Odyssey". Cinerama installed a large curved screen and since then the Schauburg have had the capability to show 70mm ‘Todd-AO’ format films. As a format that has become a cult favourite amongst cinema enthusiasts, this has ensured that the venue continues to be extremely popular.

Our ALCON speakers is a unique installation, with the system mounted in bespoke movable towers, making it easy for us to move them aside, when we need the stage for live concerts - which we do at least once a year, for our Silverster party, on years even. We also remove the first 5 rows of seats to make a dance floor.

Our new screen is in place since September 4th and ready for the premiere of Terrence Malicks new movie "KNIGHT OF CUPS” in 4K on September 10th. It is a Harkness Perlux 140 with a 1,4 gain which gives the most neutral colors and most pleasing look of all screen types and helps to eliminate the cross reflections of the deeply curved Cinerama screen at the Schauburg.

The size is 16,30 x 6,45 meters.

For our Todd-AO Festival starting October 8, our audience can look forward to the latest in screen technology, when the wonders of large format photography is shown in all its screen splendour on our new Harkness ........
