H Losco Co-Owner from 1958 to his death in 1985
Dennis Losco Jr the CFO of Superior Quartz is proud to be part of this
third-generation, family-owned and operated company which has been designing
and manufacturing specialized lamps since 1957.
As Dennis explains; "SQP’s reputation for quality products is well known
in the industry. We design and manufacture xenon lamps for LF Projection
(IMAX approved) but that’s not all, we also supply Space & Solar Simulation,
Searchlight and Military Guidance Systems."
Our family owned and operated company is passionate about what we do, hence
the 60th anniversary and because we share this enthusiasm with our staff,
they tend to stay! We understand the importance of reliability, nobody wants
lost shows due to lamp failures and we offer 1200 hours warranty for the
theatres peace of mind. Theatres who use our lamps enjoy these benefits. We
realize large format theatres are unique, so we have made it possible to
arrange payment plans to spread the costs.
Each lamp can be tracked from raw materials all the way through production
up until it reaches a theatre. Furthermore, we welcome customers to visit
our state of the art facilities. If that’s not possible but you have an
enquiry simply give us a call or drop us an email. After all this is our
speciality, not a side line.

J G Losco, December-1966.
We know the importance of up
time and should a customer need a lamp urgently we’ll make every effort to
fast track those orders.
SQP’s 62,000 square foot sales and manufacturing facility is located in
Bethlehem, PA.
A recent addition to our team has been Peter Kehm at SQP-Europe based in the
UK, responding to customer needs for a more direct supply route and
technical support, he brings decades of experience supporting IMAX equipment
and the 35mm world.
Peter tells LF Examiner, "I have been associated with SQP for 16 years
and am pleased to say the lamps are of a very high quality, it's a pleasure
to work with a family run company that takes customer satisfaction very
seriously."
Nobody at SQP is more than a phone call away. Also, yes they manufacture
15kw water cooled lamps but they are humble enough to answer enquiries about
hard to find lamps for the odd 16mm projector! I say the 1st 60 years were
built on doing things right, the next 60 will be because they insist on
getting it right.

About liquid cooled lamps from Superior Quartz Products Inc.
|
|
•
How does a liquid cooled lamp work?
As with any xenon arc lamp, the electrode gap is set at tight tolerances
creating a pinpoint light source that is focused in the reflector. What
makes the lamp different is the power level and the required cooling. A
Liquid cooled lamp has coolant channels in which refrigerated demineralised
water is forced at high flow and pressure, the coolant removes heat from the
anode and cathode.
• Where are liquid cooled lamps needed?
Liquid cooled lamps are needed in large screen venues where traditional air
cooled lamps do not suffice. Typically IMAX and IWERKS venues. They are also
used in large scale searchlights and solar simulators.
• What are the requirements for IMAX lamps?
IMAX is largely considered to be the reference in image quality. We are
proud to be IMAX approved, and hence meet and or exceed their stringent
requirements. Superior offers the highest rated warranty in the industry for
the 12 and 15kw, 70MM applications.
• How is a Superior Quartz Products Inc. liquid cooled lamp for IMAX 70mm
projection manufactured?
Liquid cooled xenon short arc lamps for IMAX 70mm projection are 100%
manufactured in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania USA. They are crafted with a
combination of state of the art manufacturing methods as well as expert hand
craftsmanship.
• The process explained - how is it physically done and tested (people
and machines)?
After purchasing assets and technology from Duro-Test, Superior Quartz
Products utilized and expanded on manufacturing methods developed by Duro-Test.
The process begins with hand crafting lamp bodies and continues with
electrode assembly, lamp assembly and then to completion with filling the
lamp and testing. Every lamp is tested to full power and analysed for proper
performance, output and stability.

•
What materials are used in the process (glass, metal and gas)?
Lamps are constructed of the highest grade quartz, tungsten, xenon gas, as
well as other high grade materials.
• Cooling and output.
These 15kw lamps are very demanding! They require water cooling and air
extraction, safety features are built into the IMAX systems to monitor these
and should one element fall short the system will turn off the lamp.
• How powerful are these lamps?
The liquid cooled xenon lamps are available in sizes from 12kw to 32kw.
The 12 and 15kw lamps are commonly used in theatre applications. The 20kw
are used in large scale searchlights (Cape Kennedy to illuminate the launch
pad and runways). Typically after launch of a space craft, the lamps remain
illuminated and can be seen in space and acts as a indicating beacon. The
20kw and the 32kw lamps are used by NASA, JPL , Lockheed Martin etc for
solar simulation. As many as 30 lamps can be used in a simulator at one time
to test equipment for space travel. Also worth noting is that a typical IMAX
GT 3D uses two lamps at the same time, so 30kw!
• What is the difference between similar products from Osram and Ushio
(durability, quality price)?
Superior and one other manufacture (Ushio) are the only two companies in the
world manufacturing these large liquid cooled lamps. We like to believe that
our quality is unequalled, our confidence in our durability confirmed by
offering 1200 hours (maximum allowed by IMAX) and our price is very
competitive with the option of payment flexibility.
• Where are Superior Quartz Products Inc. IMAX lamps used?
Superior Quartz are proud to be selling lamps worldwide, from Australia to
Sweden and once customers have tried our lamps they tend to return, also a
recent trend has shown an increase of theatres choosing our lamps, I believe
they are pleased by our down to Earth commitment and friendly service.
• Why should an IMAX customer choose Superior Quartz Inc. products?
Superior Quartz is a family run company, it has been for 60 years, our
experience and knowledge is ‘in house’ DKP70 in California use our lamps and
so do theatres that have been around for over 30 years what better reason
would one need? The highest quality, reasonable pricing and payment
flexibility, longest warranty, immediate service, and made by hard working
Americans.
