Stefan
Adler, 28. June 2003 running 70mm Garage Kino during "The Fourth Annual 70mm
Bullshit Convention". Picture by Thomas Hauerslev
I only met Stefan once, at the 4th 70mm Bullshit Convention, which he staged in
2003. But it was friendship at first sight, and I maintained an ongoing, if
occasional, email correspondence with him ever since that time. I was devastated
to learn of his passing, as he was such an interesting and fascinating person to
be with -- kindred to me in that he was a devoted showman, along with technical
skills that I could admire, a nice home in the suburbs of Gothenburg, witty &
fun, generous to a fault, and an extensive and interesting set of friends.
I never got back to Gothenburg, but I remember my visit so well. Thomas and I
made the trip north from Copenhagen by (if I recall) highway bus, and then train
to near Stefan's place. We had fun (and beer) and movies (and beer) and food --
and a bit more beer. It was a day to remember, for sure. When all the film had
been run, Stefan was kind enough to house Thomas and me overnight in their home,
before our respective return journeys the next day. I think I slept on the couch
in the living room, and it was all one large and warm family, ourselves being
included, naturally.
It's now a bit of a blur to me as to how I made it to the Gothenburg airport the
next day, but I think Stefan also volunteered to drive me there, for my return
flight home! And then, subsequently, Stefan produced a DVD of the events that
wonderful weekend, for all the participants. It was in PAL, and Swedish ... but
he went so far as to produce -- especially for me (the sole English-only speaker
present!) -- an NTSC subtitled version of the DVD! Like I say, his generosity,
friendliness, compassion, wit, and helpfulness knew no bounds.
The loss of Stefan was really crushing to me. Even though we communicated only
infrequently, and I could never get back to Gothenburg, I remember him so well,
and still am feeling the loss even now, almost a month afterwards. I missed the
gathering in 2017, which didn't have quite as much prep time as some of the
others, so I do envy Thomas his visit there last summer. We all share happy
memories of the green surroundings of Gothenburg in summer -- and the
pink of
the prints we saw there!
