The TCM Classic Film Festival (Thurs Apr 26 – Sun Apr 29, 2018) has evolved into
a major film event in the historic heart of Hollywood.
Each year the TCM festival seems to grow bigger and bigger. This year was no
exception with classic movie fans traveling from around the world to attend the
events. The four day festival utilized the following venues:
• TCL Chinese Theatre IMAX
• The Chinese Multiplex House #1, #4
& #6
• The Egyptian Theatre
• The Arclight Cinerama Dome
• The American Society of Cinematographers Clubhouse
• The Linwood Dunn Theatre
Many widescreen classics such as “Gigi”, “How to Marry a Millionaire”, “Once
Upon A Time in the West” and “Silk Stockings” were celebrated. For each of the
past five years, Arclight Cinemas and the Cinerama Dome have featured two
Cinerama productions on the giant curved screen. This year
David Strohmaier
suggested “Grand Prix” and the newly restored
"Windjammer" as the titles to be
shown and TCM readily agreed.

On Friday Apr 27, the Cinerama Dome screened a special showing of “Grand Prix”
(1966), the Oscar-winning drama shot in
Super
Panavision 70 and originally
intended for showing on Cinerama screens.
On Saturday Apr 28, the Dome screened
an exclusive presentation of
“WINDJAMMER: THE VOYAGE OF THE
CHRISTIAN RADICH” (1958), the newly restored, three panel
picture in the Cinemiracle process. This picture screened for the majority of
its theatrical life in Cinerama theaters.

Eva Marie Saint was in attendance for the “Grand Prix” screening and made an on
stage appearance with Leonard Maltin.
One of the original Panavision cameras fitted with a Super Panavision lens, used
in the filming of “Grand Prix”, was on exhibit in the Dome lobby. It was a
popular photo-op for the attendees.
Former Cinerama head at Arclight,
John Sittig, made an on-stage appearance and
was interviewed by film critic and Cinerama fan, Leonard Maltin. John is retired
from his Arclight duties but can usually be found nearby during Cinerama
screenings at the Dome.

Leonard Maltin also hosted the screening of “Windjammer” on Saturday. In the
lobby, advanced copies of the newly restored versions of “This is Cinerama” and
“Windjammer” were on sale at the Flicker Alley kiosk. There was also a display
hosted by The Los Angeles Maritime Institute. Their sailing ships, Irving
Johnson and Exy Johnson appeared in the 2012 Cinerama film, “In the Picture”.
Following the “Windjammer” screening, Dave Strohmaier and Randy Gitsch handed
out Cinerama Blu-ray discs to lucky ticket holders in the audience. Afterwards,
Dave met up with a few friends in the ever popular Dome Dining Room for lunch.
