"Splice
Here: A Projected Odyssey" is a love letter to film - told through the
eyes of documentarian and projectionist, Rob Murphy who begins a childhood
quest to find out what ever happened to cinema’s legendary (now long
extinct) wide screen film process,
Cinerama. Starting in Australia then expanding geographically and
thematically, Rob infiltrates a projectionists underground, meeting the
great champions of projected film and lesser known characters behind the
scenes. We discover how the digital revolution has not just changed the way
we now see movies but is becoming a very real threat to how we will remember
them.
It’s hard for a projectionist to
convey – it’s hard for me to convey – the feelings of continuity felt when
running a film print. The way it feels in my hands. The way it smells. The
way my heart skips a beat when I open the dowser to the light and all those
dancing little pictures combine to create a perfect illusion of reality. An
illusion that I am controlling and am now connected to. It’s magic and I’m
the gatekeeper.
If somebody had told me ten years ago I would start making a documentary
short about the end of film that would morph into a feature about the
survival of film, I probably wouldn’t have started it. But if they’d told me
the process of making this film would see me lead a team to
re-install 70mm projection at a
beautiful art deco picture palace; that might have changed my mind. That’s
exactly what happened in 2015 with the roadshow release of
"The Hateful Eight";
a film that I still run once a
month now three years later. I really can’t believe my luck when I look
around the twin platters of our bio box to see 70mm prints of all the titles
I thought I’d never see on film again, let alone be running them myself.
"Lawrence of Arabia",
"2OO1: A Space Odyssey",
"The Sound of Music" and more. It’s an unexpected golden age for film
and big formats. It has inspired me to continue this documentary journey
(now a life style) and to dig ever deeper into the clandestine community of
projectionists and film collectors
who are the unexpected heroes of film and hardware preservation.
But to finish this film we now need your help, the documentary is now
seeking crowd funding to complete an all important American leg of
photography. What’s crowd funding? Possible is an Australian owned and
operated company who’ve raised more than $62 million AUD for 15,000
individual arts projects. Possible provides the platform for project
creators to present their ideas to a connected audience worldwide. If people
love what you’re creating, they can support it by pledging money. In return,
project creators offer rewards matched to the level of funding commitment.
Each campaign incorporates a tipping point (in our case $25,000 AUD). If the
tipping point isn’t reached all pledges received are deleted. It’s safe,
easy and driven by peoples genuine interest in seeing the project completed.
If you’d like to help with a pledge? You can give as little or as much as
you like. Or if you would just like to know more about the production, visit
