Commencing
July 2nd, KINO Rotterdam presents the introduction of the 70mm film format
on its biggest screen. Becoming only the second venue in the Benelux to
support the ultimate film experience, starting off with the premiere of
Christopher Nolan's latest, "Tenet",
on August 12th. To give the projector a test drive and get our audience
acquainted with the the format, KINO will screen the majestic space
adventure "Interstellar"
(2014) in 70mm.
The search for an Academy Award winning filmprojector
The love for cinema is what drives the team behind KINO these past four
years and this July the long cherished dream to equip their largest venue
with an analogue film projector is finally realized.
"When we committed to the idea to
implement 35mm we thought why not go all the way and take it to the next
level: 70mm, the golden standard of film projection. So we searched for
over a year to acquire a projector, assemble the technical accessories
and built a projection booth that would accommodate all this. It's a
decision we took with our hearts, not our heads. But as film fanatics it
was an easy choice to invest in the best possible cinematic experience
for our audience"
-, says film programmer Jan de Vries. The
search for the Philips DP70, an
Academy Award winning projector led from the US, China, Russia to the United
Kingdom and ended in the tiny Dutch village of Geldrop. There they found one
in perfect running condition. With the help of many specialized technicians,
projectionists and enthusiasts they managed to restore a classic piece of
Dutch technical engineering to its former glory to provide this
unprecedented cinematic experience in KINO.

70mm:
the ultimate film experience
70mm was the format of choice for many helming greats like Stanley Kubrick ("2OO1:
A Space Odyssey") and David Lean ("Lawrence
of Arabia") but a new generation of authors like Paul Thomas
Anderson, Quentin Tarantino and Christopher Nolan have also embraced
analogue film as the preferred format to release their films.
"The Master",
"The Hateful
Eight" and
"Dunkirk" were all recently released on 70mm. Where digital
projection currently clocks out at 4K resolution, the analogue 70mm format
can reach up to 16K. The film is projected via millions of small moving
crystals instead of stationary pixels, resulting in a warmer image providing
more depth and a rich viewing experience.
The future of classic cinema on 70mm in KINO
Exhibiting classics alongside new titles has been a standard in KINO but the
programmers are looking forward to screening as many 70mm classics as they
can find, in the future.
'It's quite the challenge to find
and ship film prints from all over the world to Rotterdam. Besides the
fact that a single print can weigh in at 300 kilograms, analogue film is
a slowly dying medium. This is because film stock fades and is easily
damaged just by usage. But there are many beautiful prints left out
there and we'll do our best to get them to KINO'
-, fellow programmer Frank Groot states
with resolve. At KINO they believe that experiencing films in the cinema is
a universal, timeless experience. Even if a younger generation has grown up
with digital projection, analogue still holds that vintage magic of
projecting a still image, transforming it into something fluid. An
experience they would like to re-introduce to their audience - young and old
- with 35mm and 70mm.
