The following is a reference / historical listing of the 70-millimeter
re-release engagements of “How the West Was Won” in the United States and
Canada.
The MGM release was directed by Henry Hathaway, John Ford and George Marshall
and starred Carroll Baker, Lee J. Cobb, Henry Fonda, Carolyn Jones, Karl Malden,
Gregory Peck, George Peppard, Robert Preston, Debbie Reynolds, James Stewart,
Eli Wallach, John Wayne and Richard Widmark.
“How the West Was Won” originally was released in 1962 (1963 in the USA) in the
tri-panel Cinerama process. The 70mm version was initially intended for
international locales that lacked the ability to play Cinerama and by 1971 a
print turned up for domestic bookings.
