Fred
Zinnemann's beloved OSCAR winning musical "Oklahhoma!" (1955) will
have it's European DCP premiere at one of the most prestigious 70mm cinemas;
the Schauburg in Karlsruhe, Germany. It is a single screening of the new and
much anticipated digital 4K restoration of this classic musical by Rodgers &
Hammerstein. It is with great pleasure that we publish the news about
"Oklahoma!".
This unique 4k presentation, painstakingly restored from 65mm Todd-AO
elements by Twentieth Century Fox and Fotokem, will be screened at 30 frames
per second — the same frame rate as when the film was originally released in
1955. The original 6-track soundtrack has been also restored and re-mastered
at Twentieth Century Fox, in collaboration with End Point Audio and Chase
Audio by Deluxe. The new version was created at FotoKem under the
supervision of Schawn Belston, senior VP of library and technical services
at Fox Filmed Entertainment.
Festival organizers Herbert Born and Thomas Hauerslev both agrees:
This
is the first screening in Europe of this DCP, and we hope the audience will enjoy seeing this
classic award
winning Todd-AO film. We can think of no better pre-show to the
10th Todd-AO Festival. After all, it is nearly 6 decades since the world
premiere in New York. It has also been decades since "Oklahoma!" was last
screened on the continent, so we are quite excited about this. It is truly a
rare movie.
Herbert Born continues:
At the time of writing this, extensive test are going on in the Schauburg
to make sure the digital premiere will be none other than staggering.
Projector and sound will be re-wired to be able to present 30 frames pr.
second and full 6-track HD sound. The data transfer alone is 500 mbyte/second.
Tickets for "Oklahoma!"
for 2. October 2014 is available through the Schauburg's
web site.
