"The
Sound of Music" Blu-ray special edition.
I must confess that I was quite surprised to read the
criticisms on two Blu-Ray recent editions on this page. They refer to
"Sound of Music" and "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang", the latter being
exhibited in Cinerama 70 in the 1960's, which I attended.
I don't mean to be rude but I have no alternative other than to firmly
dismiss some of those criticisms. Frustrating? Yes, by all means, but "SOM"
and "CCBB" never looked better.
In fact, "CCBB" looks astounding. Apparently, the picture was
processed at 4K under the Lowry Digital auspices a while ago. Colour and
detail are exemplary, so much so that I don't recall seeing it so good since
the original Cinerama presentation.
In addition, this is one of the rare instances where the sound was remixed
to 7.1 and one can actually hear the surround back in action.
There is evidence of sonic deterioration in a few dialogue lines, but
overall the sound is superb.
Frankly, I don't expect to see on disc the same sensation 70mm projection
had on me, but we are talking here about home cinema, correct?
And just to point out a review of a person with whom I exchanged many
e-mails in the past and that I can trust, please read
this.
Also, please take a look on some of the words John Lowry said about
4 K restoration.
There is in fact so much sharpness and detail that I cannot concur that
these restorations look bad. In "Sound of Music" colour registration
is consistent from the beginning to the end of the movie. We all know for a
fact that this was not the same with film stock, so what the restorators
achieved is remarkable!
Sorry about this disagreement but I felt that I must give proper credit
where credit is due! I am also sorry that the reviewers didn't enjoy those
two Blu-Ray editions.
For your reference, I use a Panasonic BD-30 Blu-Ray player and a Samsung 55"
LED 1080p/240 Hz set, model UN55B8000LX.
