 This
year it is exactly fifty years ago that The Sound of Music (1965) was first
released in Dutch cinemas. This Oscar-laden musical (five Academy Awards)
about Baron Von Trapp, his fifteen children and their governess Maria (Julie
Andrews) remained one of the most enduringly popular Hollywood films well
into the seventies and achieved a true cult status. The soundtrack was
written by the renowned duo Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, who
had also written the score for the original Broadway musical. Schawn Belston
of 20th Century Fox, who is responsible for the recent digital restoration,
will be present in EYE to give an introduction to the screening. The Sound of Music was already restored to its original 70mm format in 2001. To celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of this American classic, the film was digitally re-restored in 2015. Schawn Belston, Executive Vice President of Film Preservation and Worldwide Library Services at 20th Century Fox, will talk about the digital restoration project prior to the film screening. Belston is also a guest speaker during the public lecture “Hollywood Studios: Twentieth Century Fox and the restoration of The King and I (1956)” on Thursday 11 February at 15:30. This lecture is part of the public lecture series This is Film! Film Heritage in Practice (on extraordinary film heritage projects), which takes place in EYE from February 4 to March 10. |
