In 2009, I was watching the first part of
“It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World”
when I stated I knew where the ‘desert road’ going down the mountain was
filmed. I thought it was Hwy S22 (The Montezuma Valley Rd) going down into
Borrego Springs, California.
So I went to Google Street View to find out that I was wrong. What began as
a search for the road (I found that it was Hwy 74 – the Pines to Palms Hwy),
ended up making me wonder where other scenes were filmed.
It turned into a hobby, as it took six years to find all but 3 of the 915
SCENES (on the Blu-Ray DVD) – their geographic and camera locations. I drove
to every one; some several times.
For people who like the movie, I think these albums are the best one source
for location information. Other web sites have referred to them, and I have
been trying to advertise them (for free naturally).

Three additional albums:
•
Information on the D-18 airplane which flew thru the sign and Butler Hanger
•
SCENE 275 – a background location that I could not find
•
SCENE 327 – another scene I couldn’t locate.
