Hollywood — Another major studio has plans for a large-area negative system
from which standard, CinemaScope and special-sized prints may be made, it is
learned in the announcement by E. J. Mannix, M-G-M general studio manager,
that Metro has developed a 65 mm. photography process for utilization on
important forthcoming pictures. Process, according to Mannix, resulted from a study and evaluation of experiments extending over many yearn, directed by Douglas Shearer, in charge of M-G-M technical research, and assisted by Franklin Milton. Contributions to the development were made by the technical teams of John Arnold, camera department head; Merle Chamberlin, head of the projection department, and his staff; E. J. Tucker, laboratory head, and his staff of experts, including Irving Ries, Jock Turner, Elmer Londre, and Herman Lents. Pictures utilizing the new system will be filmed with cameras having conventional - type mechanisms adapted to handle double-sized film. Special camera lenses developed for the system by Panavision, Inc., are said to provide for simple operation, minimum weight and photographic images with sharp focus and freedom from distortion. There are two cameras in existence, one manufactured by Robert Gottschalk and the other developed in M-G-M camera department. As for the projector, it is quite certain they'll use Philips AO projector. This is same one used in projection of Todd AO.
