I still do not personally think this development presages a vast and
immediate revival of 70mm exhibition,
because, for example, 2 of the 3 cinemas
playing it in L.A. had to
actually install rented equipment (presumably paid for by P. T. Anderson's
production company). The only one "ready to go" was the Dome -- and the Dome
was (so I heard) only getting about 6 FL of illumination on the screen, when
the nominal standard is at least 14, and a desired level of 16. And the
cross reflections from the curve were damaging the contrast (even with the
image only at about 1.85:1 aspect ratio), so they made a special print on
the "Premiere" stock for the Dome, because of the higher contrast
achievable. Everyone else was using prints on standard Vision stock.

In any event, it's a noble effort by a filmmaker who really knows what he
wants to see on the screen -- and can afford to pay amazing sums to achieve
his vision -- a situation that is increasingly unusual in the world of show
BIZ.

Sad to say, the exterior signage doesn't say
anything about 70mm. (sigh!). Just to reinforce the fact that Pacific is not
"promoting" the 70mm aspect of the shows, here is a detail of the exterior
sign ... well, you show ME where it says 70mm anywhere on the signage...?

Though some of us never thought
we'd see such again, "it's alive"!!!: A new film running as a commercial
release, in more than one location, and ads bearing some kind of tagline
about "70mm Presentation"!
The Friday paper, as is typical for new openings, had a full-page ad. This
smaller ad from the Saturday paper where you can clearly see -- if you zoom
in on it -- how they are advertising it, in all the various formats that are
running (DCP, 35mm and 70mm).
