“Circus World”: The North American 70mm

 The following is a reference / historical listing of the roadshow presentations
of “Circus World” (aka “The Magnificent Showman”) in the United States and
Canada. These were the first and best cinemas in which to experience this motion
picture.The presentations cited in the main section of this work were “hard ticket” roadshow engagements (i.e. special, long-running, showcase presentations in major cities prior to the film being exhibited as a general release). Much like a stage production, these featured advanced admission pricing, reserved seating, an overture/intermission/entr’acte/exit music, and an average of only ten scheduled screenings per week. Souvenir program booklet were sold, as well, and, in some locales, the film’s soundtrack album. The print type utilized during this film’s roadshow release was rectified 70-millimeter with discrete magnetic six-channel stereophonic sound and were projected onto large, deeply curved screens in Cinerama-branded cinemas. The Samuel Bronston production and Paramount release was directed by Henry Hathaway (“How the West Was Won,” “Raid on Rommel”) and starred John Wayne, Rita Hayworth and Claudia Cardinale. The film’s world premiere was held June 24th, 1964 at the Capri in Dallas, Texas. Out of the hundreds of first-run films released in North America during 1964, “Circus World” was among only six given deluxe roadshow treatment and among only seven released with 70mm prints (five, including “Circus World,” from large format or large aperture origination plus two blow-ups).
