The
following is a reference / historical listing of the 70-millimeter presentations
of “Logan’s Run ” in North America. These were the cinemas worth seeking out to
experience this motion picture.
“Logan’s Run” was among four confirmed first-run films released in 1976 with
70mm prints for selected engagements. Approximately two-dozen 70mm prints of the
film were struck for distribution in North America. The MGM (though United
Artists) release — directed by Michael Anderson and starring Michael York and
Jenny Agutter — opened June 23rd (except where noted otherwise).
The 70mm prints of “Logan’s Run” featured full-frame imagery blown up from
anamorphic 35mm and a dual inventory of Dolby* and non-Dolby-encoded discrete
six-track stereophonic sound. (*A few of the prints—noted in the listing
below—were encoded with Dolby Noise Reduction, the first known usage of Dolby in
connection with the 70mm format.)
Pre-release screenings included a sneak preview held May 7th at Valley Circle in
San Diego. (The sneak preview/test screening reportedly included “laser-beam
holography to produce a three-dimensional image” and Dolby-encoded audio.)
The duration of the engagements (measured in weeks) is included in parenthesis
following the cinema name.
