The
following is a reference / historical listing of the 70-millimeter
engagements of “The Towering Inferno” in the United States and Canada. These
were the cinemas worth seeking out to experience this motion picture.
“The Towering Inferno” was among five confirmed first-run films released in
1974 with 70mm prints for selected engagements. The Irwin Allen production
and Warner Bros./20th Century-Fox release was directed by John Guillermin
(“The Blue Max,” “King Kong” [1976]) and starred Steve McQueen, Paul Newman,
William Holden and Faye Dunaway.
The 70mm prints of “The Towering Inferno” featured six-track magnetic audio
and full-frame imagery blown up from anamorphic 35mm.
