Written by: Ivan Školuda, Slovak Republic Date: 23.05.2024
Currently, 70mm festivals are regularly organized all over the world. The Banská Bystrica show in the Slovak Republic has several characteristics that make it significantly different from other 70mm shows in Europe. It is both an open-air show and the smallest 70mm film festival. Only three 70mm screenings will take place over three days. It is the only (known) and regular open-air presentation of 70mm films in Europe. The Amphitheatre in Banska Bystrica is the last known large outdoor summer cinema in Europe that can also screen 70mm films. The screenings take place on a gigantic 32 x 15 metre panoramic screen with a beautiful view of the city of Banská Bystrica in the evening light behind it.

To make the day more interesting, we prepared a presentation of 8mm, 16mm and 35mm techniques and films in the cinema hall of the SNP Museum. Visitors can see films of different formats, genres and from different historical periods. We hope that everyone will find something that will interest them. The programme of the weekend will be intense and moreover the city of Banská Bystrica offers many other opportunities to enjoy your time.

The show was prepared for you by OZ for Amphitheatre!, the SNP Museum and the Film Club in Banská Bystrica.

The festival is English friendly. All films will be screened in their original sound track with Czech subtitles and additional English subtitles in case of non-English speaking films (except for "Gappa", which will be screened in Czech version with English subtitles).

We hope that the weather will behave, so we will all be able to enjoy the "Splendour of 70mm" under the open night sky. The experience of open-air 70mm is different from the experience in a classic cinema. It is hard to explain. Come and try for yourself.
