Can you imagine spending a weekend in Karlsruhe with Michael Douglas,
Anna Karina, Max von Sydow, Julie Christie, Ava Gardner, Charlton
Heston, Clint Eastwood and many more? If the answer is “Yes”, some might
ask you “Why”, “How” or even “Who”? Well, they are all there “in 70mm”,
on the majestic Cinerama screen of the Schauburg Kino.
For those who may be a newcomer, 70mm film has a very large negative and
projection area, which produces extraordinarily sharp images on the
movie screen. The film will look much brighter and sharper compared to
ordinary 35mm film. There are more details, and 70mm is sometimes
likened to being a “window to the world”. 70mm is a very realistic
illusion of reality. There is so much resolution and clarity, that it’s
probably unlike anything you have ever seen.
This weekend, we will all be enjoying 70mm and 6-track stereophonic
sound, the premiere format, which many of us know and appreciate. The
high-end film projection system which was used to photograph many EPIC
road-show films, most of which premiered more that 40-50 years ago.
The 7th Todd-AO Festival is the annual nostalgic “trip” down memory lane
and an opportunity to see a wide range of films - some well-known, and
some less well known. Some titles even thought to be long lost and so
extremely rare, that we understand they are the only prints left to be
shown.
Some may even ask “What has drawn you to 70mm?” I think fans will say
something like; “70mm is so sharp”, “The sound is very good”, “It
reminds me of my first date”, or “I saw this film in my youth, and I
never forgot it”. All true statements and surely there are many more if
you ask the people sitting next to you.
The odour of vinegar, magnetic oxide and old films in general, might get
into the foyer during the weekend, but management can assure you, it is
completely harmless, and will only make the 70mm fans relax during the
weekend. The original spectacle of some of the prints is long gone as
the colors are faded to pink or brown, however, that does not take away
the unique chance to experience films in the proper environment –
perhaps for the last time.
With all that in mind, we are proud to present our program. We welcome
all of you, and hope you will enjoy the 7th Todd-AO Festival.
