It is with great sadness that I report to all
of Rich’s friends that he has gone to the great movie theater in the sky. He
died of pulmonary edema and congestive heart failure on Labor Day, September
5 at 10 AM after a four week stay at Methodist Hospital of Arcadia. His
wife, Anna, of 33 years was by his side. Rich was 63.
From his earliest years in San Marino, a suburb of Los Angeles, Rich’s life
long love of sound and movies developed backstage at San Marino high school.
From 1963 to 1967, he worked as Stage Manager and Director of Audio Visual
Services at San Marino High School. After graduation, he went on to attend
Pasadena Community College. Years later, he always kept in touch with his
high school drama teacher.
Rich enjoyed his time with his church and had a strong faith. He was an
Elder at the Arcadia Presbyterian Church in Arcadia where he and Anna first
met.
In the mid 1960’s, Rich and Anna started up their own company, Consolidated
Media Services (CMS) in Pasadena. Rich’s great love for film helped to make
it a well respected professional E-6 photo lab in the days when all pictures
were captured on film. The company started in a bathroom in their Acadia
townhome, moved to a building in Pasadena in the 1980’s and then to a larger
Pasadena location in 1993.
His busy career continued.
1965 to 1970: Purchasing Manager, Custom Fidelity Company, Inc. Hollywood,
CA
1970 to 1975: General Manager, Audio Industries Corporation, Hollywood, CA
1975 to 1979: Business Administrator, Arcadia Presbyterian Church.
1979 to 1983: General Manager, Paramount Sound Systems Corporation,
Glendale, CA
1983 to 1986: Vice President, Martinsound, Inc., Alhambra, CA
1965 to 2002: President and Owner, Consolidated Media Services, Inc.,
Pasadena, CA
2002 to present: VP – Administration, Martinsound Inc., Alhambra, CA
His many professional affiliations include:
Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers,
(Member, Hollywood Section)
Audio Engineering Society
(Member and Past Treasurer, Los Angeles Section)
Association of Visual Comunicators
(Past Officer and Chair of the Cindy Awards Judging Panel)
Association for Multi-Image
National Notary Association
National Association of Church Business Administrators
(Certified Church Business Administrator)
(Past Convention Photographer)

Tom,
I enjoyed your write-up in in70mm.com about Rich. Rich has been my
longest adult friend. I met him in 1970 as a customer at Audio
Industries and we have been friends ever since. I was just 16 at the
time. In addition to being friends, Rich was a key employee for over 12
years and a trusted adviser in between in my audio company. His to trips
to the UK were highlights of his life. Rich was a mentor to my son who
is starting his career in the film business. Thanks for sharing.

Rich was also busy in his home life with Anna and his many interests – his
church, movies, computers, technology, their cats and so much more. Both
Rich and Anna loved the movies. Frequently they hosted screenings of the
latest releases in their home cinema to the delight of their many friends
from around the world. Rich would always include cartoons, short subjects
and documentaries to embellish the main feature. Everyone received a
customized printed program and Anna provided a wide array of tasty snack
treats.

Tom, thank you so much for writing this lovely eulogy. I first met
Richard in the Spring of 1972 and we have been friends ever since. It
was a great loss for me ... we wandered some fascinating trails.
This was so meaningful to me as I am sure it will be to others. I don't
know where you are located but I recently heard that there will be a
Memorial Service for Richard at Arcadia Presbyterian Church on Saturday,
October 8th at 10:00 AM. I will be there.
Thank you again. This is a great piece.

His vast movie collection in various formats includes tape, laserdisc, DVD
and Blu-ray. Before he stopped counting, somewhere back around 2006, Rich
had already accumulated over 12,000 movie titles. He meticulously entered
all the information from each title into his proprietary Motion Picture
Technical Database where this information is accessible using barcode
scanning.

Although Rich attended the Bradford
Widescreen Weekend only twice (2003,
2008), his contributions have been invaluable. He befriended many film fans
during his visits and has kept in close touch with them over the years. He
will be fondly remembered by all those he touched.
