It’s always a pleasure to take a trip to Karlsruhe, Germany, and the
70mm-festival at the Schauburg Theatre. I have been there quite a few times now
and, of course, also this year. Many films in the best film format for a
weekend. Usually with a nice warm up on the Thursday with one or two films in
4K. But it’s not only the movies. It’s everything around it. Lots of
70mm-lovers. It’s all so well planned and you don’t need to leave the theater
apart from when you need some sleep. You get your ticket and everything is
included. All the movies, of course. Breakfast, coffee & cookies and dinner. One
evening you also get a glass or more of tasty beer.
One day there’s always an interesting lecture about the history of 70mm by the
expert Thomas Hauerslev. This year also by
Orla Vestergaard Nielsen. He informed
us about a new 70mm camera. And finally Morten Skallerud introduced and showed
us his short film "A
Year Along the Abandoned Road" and another more recent film ["Where the Trains Used to Go"].
It hardly ever happens, but if you are restless and want to go for a walk and
see some sights I can recommend Badische Weinstuben im Botanischen Garten. They
have a delicious Schwarzwaldbecher. And it’s so nice to sit outside in the
beautiful park. The park is very close to the castle. I have never been inside
it but it’s a little special to me because one of our greatest opera singers,
Birgit Nilsson, sung there many years ago. I mention her because I’m an opera
singer myself and I have attended her master classes a couple of times at the
Malmö Opera and also sung at the Birgit Nilsson Museum in Svenstad, not far from
Båstad, Sweden, in July, this year.
Anyway, back to the Schauburg and the main reason for going to Karlsruhe. The
theater is one of my absolute favorites with the big curved screen and a
beautiful curtain. To enjoy big films there in the good company of other movie
lovers is nothing but thrilling. An interesting film this year was one from the
DDR: "Hauptmann Florian von der Mühle". The colors were still there and it looked
almost new.
Hoffa, I saw for the first time. And "Dersu
Uzula" - both of these two were a
little pale but very, very good films. My favorite this year was "West Side
Story", in full color. What a treat.
I would like to thank each and everyone working at the Schauburg Theater. Thank
you also Thomas Hauerslev and Herbert Born. You are doing a fantastic job and
make us feel truly welcome.
