There's
a renaissance happening in celluloid film, with large format 65mm reigniting
imaginations across the industry. This lost art - often prohibitively
expensive - is now back, available in the UK and surprisingly affordable
thanks to Digital Orchard’s (DO) new Lasergraphics ScanStation and an
integrated digital workflow.
Callum Just, DO's founder, had just finished working on
"Murder on the Orient Express",
a 65mm shoot. 'We were shooting large format as Branagh (director) and
Zambarloukos (cinematographer) felt it offered a far more beautiful and
crisp picture. I hadn't shot 65mm before and so set about creating workflows
that would tie in all our digital nowledge to make things easier on set, on
location and in the lab. The final look was stunning and I left set thinking
of ways to make 65mm – and film generally- more accessible for other film
makers.'
The solution was DO investing in a new 16mm, 35mm and 65mm scanner that
would mean UK and European productions could process their film dailies
locally, substantially reducing transport costs and turnaround time with a
one-stop-shop operation for both film and digital shoots.

at their facility in London, this new scanner provides a complete end-to-end
4k solution that makes shooting on 65mm as accessible as any other format
for all sizes of production, liberating creative decisions about the look
each shoot wants to achieve. By incorporating all the benefits of a digital
workflow into celluloid shoots DO applies its expertise to film productions,
providing cinematographers and directors with rapid 4k dailies exactly as
they would do on a digital shoot.
DO will be showcasing this new technology and workflow with a series of
events for producers, cinematographers, line producers and post-production
supervisors. More details will be announced soon.
