After more than a year of waiting due to the release being postponed several
times, on Friday the 11th of February 2022, I have finally attended a special
70MM screening of Kenneth Branagh’s “Death on the Nile” at ARCADIA Cinema
Melzo (Milan). ARCADIA Energy Screen is the Premium Large Format theatre within
the Melzo flagship cinema location. It is the only one commercial cinema in
Italy and among the very few in the world (around 30) to screen “Death on the
Nile” in the wonderful 70MM film format.
With its impressive 30 meters wide huge screen and Meyer Sound speakers
throughout the sides, rear screen and top ceiling, Sala Energia is the perfect
place to enjoy such a movie. I was informed from Laura that the print had
arrived to ARCADIA from Fotokem Lab in Los Angeles in 7 reels with a total
weight of 80 kilos. Piero Fumagalli himself, ARCADIA’s owner and 70MM films
enthusiast, had assembled the cores into the film reel which I’ve admired ready
on the platter during my visit to the booth before the screening. Piero
personally screens every show out of his over 40 years 70MM film projection
experience and same inspiring passion.

As
usual at premieres, many patrons have participated wearing Thirties vintage clothings
inspired by the movie.
The quality of the print was outstanding with deep blacks and a very warm color
palette. For the screening, they are using the Cinemeccanica Victoria 8 ZX10000H
film projector (in Energy booth, there’s also a DP70 projector and two Christie
Digital 4K dual-stack projectors outfitted with Cinemeccanica laser-light
source). As it always happens, “Death on the Nile” is being screened in
70MM both in Italian dubbed for the vast majority of showtimes and also with
weekly showtimes in Original Version with Italian subtitles.
Even though it is set in Egypt, the movie was mainly shot in England at
Longcross Studios (where “Murder on the Orient Express” was also shot)
and the wizards of post-production then inserted all the Egyptian backdrops.
With all these digital effects the photography is sometimes a bit flat but the
use of the 65mm negative gives a depth and a warmth feeling that digital still
doesn't have, especially in the close-ups of the actors and the interiors of
Karnak steamer.

ARCADIA is always at the forefront of providing its audience with unique
experiences on the big screen. It was such a great privilege for me to go back
to the cinema for a true Cinematic special screening after so much home content
viewing during the pandemic. 70MM has fully reminded me the big difference of
such different viewing contexts. Now we are all looking forward to seeing the
new Christopher Nolan film "Oppenheimer" obviously in 70MM in 2023.
