The following is a reference / historical listing of the roadshow presentations
of “The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm” in the United States and Canada.
These were the first and only cinemas in which to experience this motion picture
with a roadshow policy and in the Cinerama curved-screen process.
The presentations cited in the main section of this work were “hard ticket”
roadshow engagements (i.e. special, long-running, showcase presentations in
major cities prior to the film being exhibited as a general release). Much like
a stage production, these featured advanced admission pricing, reserved seating,
an overture/intermission/entr’acte/exit music, and an average of only ten
scheduled screenings per week. Souvenir program booklet were sold, as well, and,
in some locales, the film’s soundtrack album.
The print type utilized during the film’s roadshow release was Cinerama (i.e.
6-perf 35mm x 3 plus 35mm fullcoat for interlocked 7-channel audio and presented
in special cinemas with a large, deeply curved screen.
The George Pal production and MGM release was directed by Henry Levin and George
Pal (Fairy Tales) and starred Laurence Harvey, Claire Bloom, Karl Boehm, Walter
Slezak, Oscar Homolka, Barbara Eden, Yvette Mimieux as The Dancing Princess,
Russ Tamblyn as The Woodsman, Jim Backus as The King, Beulah Bondi as The Lonely
Gypsy, Terry-Thomas as Ludwig, The Knight and Buddy Hackett as Hans, The
Servant. “Brothers Grimm” was the first narrative feature film produced in
3-panel Cinerama.
Out of the hundreds of first-run films released in North America during 1962,
“The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm” was among only nine given deluxe
roadshow treatment and among only two issued in Cinerama.
