The following is a reference / historical listing of the roadshow presentations
of “Mutiny on the Bounty” in the United States and Canada. These were the first
and best cinemas in which to experience this motion picture.
The presentations cited in the main section of this work were “hard ticket”
roadshow engagements (i.e. special, long-running, showcase presentations in
major cities prior to the film being exhibited as a general release). Much like
a stage production, these featured advanced admission pricing, reserved seating,
an overture/intermission/entr’acte/exit music, and an average of only ten
scheduled screenings per week. Souvenir program booklet were sold, as well, and,
in some locales, the film’s soundtrack album.
The print types utilized during the film’s roadshow release were, depending on
the booking, (1) 70-millimeter (Ultra Panavision 70) with discrete magnetic
six-channel stereophonic sound and (2) 35-millimeter with discrete magnetic
four-channel stereophonic sound and (3) 35mm with optical monaural sound.
(Technically, the four-channel magnetic prints were “mag-optical” whereby they
contained both a 4-channel magnetic track and an optical mono track and cinemas
sent such a print had the option of presenting in either format.)
The MGM release was directed by Lewis Milestone (“Pork Chop Hill,” “Ocean’s 11”)
and starred Marlon Brando, Trevor Howard and Richard Harris. The film’s world
premiere was held November 8th, 1962 at the State in New York.
Out of the hundreds of first-run films released in North America during 1962,
“Mutiny on the Bounty” was among only nine given deluxe roadshow treatment and
among only four issued with 70mm prints.
