70mm to Kinopanorama
By:
Alain Dorange, 02.09.2012

Because the Russian Kinopanorama theatres were supposedly not getting the 70mm projectors on time to show the 70mm movies, some of those films have been converted to 3-STRIP in order to accommodate the 8 Kinopanorama theatres with their 35mm projectors. There were 2 types of 70mm films:

The SOVSCOPE 70 is similar to Todd-AO since their cameras were designed on the camera brought by Michael Todd when he was in Moscow with Elizabeth Taylor. The major difference: the negative is 70mm instead of 65mm.

The KINOPANORAMA 70 is similar to ULTRA PANAVISION 70 with the same anamorphic of 1.25

So here is the listing of the converted 9 movies

1961 (107 Minutes) THE STORY OF THE FLAMING YEARS (Povest Plamennykh let)
Filmed in Sovscope 70 or Todd-AO camera (not confirmed)

1962 (115 Minutes) THE TRIAL OF MADMEN (Sud Sumasschedshikh)
Filmed in Sovscope 70

1963 (94 Minutes) BATMANOVA,SINGING SLAVE (Krepostnaya Aktrisa)
Filmed in Kinopanorama 70

1963 ( 98 Minutes) THE LAW OF THE ANTARTIC (Zakon Antarktidy)
Filmed in Sovscope 70

1963 (30 Minutes) ON SUBMARINE SCOOTERS (Na Podvodnikh Skuterakh)
Filmed in Kinopanorama 70

1963 (121 Minutes) THE OPTIMISTIC TRAGEDY (Optimicheskaya Tragediya)
Filmed in Sovscope 70 (black and white)

1964 (98 Minutes) BOLSHOI BALLET (Sekret Uspekha)
Filmed in Sovscope 70

1964 (90 Minutes) THE SLEEPING BEAUTY (Spyaschaya Krasavitsa ) (Leningrad KIROV Ballet)
