The
following is a reference / historical listing of the 70-millimeter
engagements of “Carmen” in North America. These were the cinemas worth
seeking out to experience this motion picture.
“Carmen” was among eighteen confirmed first-run films released in 1984 with
70mm prints for selected engagements. The motion picture, based upon Bizet’s
opera “Carmen,” was directed by Francesco Rosi (“The Mattei Affair,” “Three
Brothers”) and starred Plácido Domingo and Julia Migenes-Johnson. The
French-Italian co-production premiered in France in 1984.
The 70mm prints of “Carmen” featured French-language Six-Track Dolby Stereo
(“A”) and full-frame imagery (2.20:1) blown up from spherical 35mm.
