The following is a reference / historical listing of the 70-millimeter
engagements of “Days of Heaven” in the United States and Canada. These were the
cinemas worth seeking out to experience the best presentation of this motion
picture.
“Days of Heaven” was among nine confirmed first-run films released in 1978 with
70mm prints for selected engagements. The Paramount release — directed by
Terrence Malick (“Badlands”) and starring Richard Gere, Brooke Adams, Sam
Shepard and Linda Manz — opened in limited release September 13th.
The film’s world premiere was held September 12th at Cinema 1 as a part of the
New York Film festival.
The 70mm prints of “Days of Heaven” featured Six-Track Dolby Stereo (“A”) and
pillarboxed imagery (approximately 1.85:1) blown up from spherical 35mm.
Conflicting information exists as to whether the audio format was a Todd-AO
5-screen/1-surround layout (Dolby format 41) or a Baby Boom layout (Dolby format
42) or if it was released multi-inventory.
Paramount circulated 70mm Six-Track Dolby coming-attraction trailers for “Death
on the Nile,” “Goin’ South,” “Hurricane,” “Oliver’s Story” and “Up in Smoke”
during the release of “Days of Heaven.” Other studios circulated 70mm trailers
during this period, as well. Ultimately, any 70mm trailers screened during 70mm
presentations of “Days of Heaven” varied by venue and screening.
