The following is a reference / historical listing of the 70-millimeter
engagements of “The Last Temptation of Christ” in the United States and Canada.
These were the cinemas worth seeking out to experience the best presentation of
this motion picture.
“The Last Temptation of Christ” was among twelve confirmed first-run films
released in 1988 with 70mm prints for selected engagements. The Cineplex Odeon
Films presentation and Universal release — directed by Martin Scorsese (”Taxi
Driver,” “GoodFellas”) and starring Willem Dafoe, Harvey Keitel, Barbara
Hershey, Harry Dean Stanton and David Bowie — opened August 12th.
For the release of “The Last Temptation of Christ,” Universal employed the
services of Lucasfilm’s Theatre Alignment Program (TAP) to evaluate and approve
the cinemas selected to book a 70mm print.
The 70mm prints of “The Last Temptation of Christ” featured Six-Track Dolby
Stereo (“A” encoded Baby Boom format) and pillarboxed imagery (approximately
1.85:1) blown up from spherical 35mm.
Note the decision to release “The Last Temptation of Christ” with 70mm prints
was made too late for the prints to be ready for an opening-day delivery and so
the film opened in 35mm. Replacement 70mm prints were delivered mid-run as noted
below next to each applicable booking.
Universal circulated 70mm Six-Track Dolby coming-attraction trailers for
“Gorillas in the Mist,” “Moon Over Parador,” “Talk Radio” and “Twins” during the
release of “The Last Temptation of Christ.” Other studios circulated 70mm
trailers during this period, as well. Ultimately, any 70mm trailers screened
during 70mm presentations of “The Last Temptation of Christ” varied by venue and
screening.
The duration of the engagements (measured in weeks) is included in parenthesis
following the cinema name.
