The following is a reference / historical listing of the 70-millimeter
engagements of “The Ninth Configuration” in the United States and Canada. These
were the cinemas worth seeking out to experience the best presentation of this
motion picture.
“The Ninth Configuration” was among eleven confirmed first-run films released in
1980 with 70mm prints for selected engagements. The Ninth Configuration Co.
production and Warner Bros. release — directed by William Peter Blatty and
starring Stacy Keach — opened February 8th.
In summer 1980, United Film took over distribution from Warner Bros., re-edited
the film and re-issued it under the title of “Twinkle, Twinkle, ‘Killer’ Kane.”
The 70mm prints of “The Ninth Configuration”/”Twinkle, Twinkle, ‘Killer’ Kane”
featured six-track stereophonic sound (non-Dolby) and full-frame imagery blown
up from anamorphic 35mm.
Warner Bros. circulated 70mm coming-attraction trailers for “Gilda Live,” “The
Shining” and “When Time Ran Out” during the release of “The Ninth
Configuration.” Upon the UFD takeover, circulating 70mm trailers included ”Lion
of the Desert.” Other studios circulated 70mm trailers during this period, as
well. Ultimately, any 70mm trailers screened during 70mm presentations of “The
Ninth Configuration”/”Twinkle, Twinkle, ‘Killer’ Kane” varied by venue and
screening.
The duration of the engagements (measured in weeks) is included in parenthesis
following the cinema name.
