The following is a reference / historical listing of the Six-Track (both 70mm and 35mm) presentations of “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” in North America. These were the cinemas worth seeking out to experience this motion picture.

“Terminator 2” was among ten confirmed first-run films released in 1991 with 70mm prints for selected engagements. The TriStar release — directed by James Cameron (“The Abyss,” “Titanic”) and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton and Robert Patrick — opened July 3rd.

Pre-release screenings included the world premiere held July 1st at Century Plaza in Los Angeles and one-day-early sneak preview screenings held during the evening of July 2nd at numerous locales.

For the release of “Terminator 2” TriStar employed the services of Lucasfilm’s Theatre Alignment Program (TAP) to evaluate and approve the cinemas selected to book a 70mm print.

There was a triple inventory of 70mm prints of “Terminator 2”: (1) Cinema Digital Sound, (2) A-encoded Six-Track Dolby Stereo, and (3) SR-encoded Six-Track Dolby Stereo, each with a split surround playback option. The 70mm prints featured full-frame imagery (2.20:1) blown up from Super-35. And there was a triple inventory of 35mm prints: (1) Cinema Digital Sound, (2) Dolby A, and (3) Dolby SR. The film’s 35mm prints were blown up from Super-35 and optically re-photographed in anamorphic format (2.39:1).

Historical footnote: Cinema Digital Sound (CDS), one of a few digital audio formats introduced between 1990-1993, accelerated an industry trend of fewer titles released with 70mm prints.

TriStar circulated trailers for “Another You,” “The Fisher King” and “Hook” during the release of “Terminator 2” As well, other studios circulated trailers during this period. Ultimately, the trailers, if any, seen during the presentations of “T2” varied by venue and screening.

The duration of the engagements (measured in weeks) is included in parenthesis following the cinema name.

Note that some of the 70mm presentations included in this listing may have been presented in 35mm during the latter week(s) of engagement due to contractual terms or print damage and the distributor’s unwillingness to supply a 70mm replacement print or because the booking was moved to a smaller, non-70mm-equipped auditorium within a multiplex. As well, the reverse scenario may have been true in some cases whereas a booking began with a 35mm print because the lab was unable to complete the 70mm print order in time for an opening-day delivery or the exhibitor negotiated a mid-run switch to 70mm. And in the cases of a 35mm-CDS presentation, some switched to 35mm-Dolby during the latter week(s). In such cases, any 35mm (or standard Dolby) portion of the engagement (or movement out of a branded auditorium) has been included in the duration figure.
