following is a reference / historical listing of the 70-millimeter
presentations of Oppenheimer in the United States and Canada. These were
the cinemas worth seeking out to experience this motion picture.The Syncopy production and Universal release was directed by Christopher Nolan (Dunkirk, Tenet) and starred Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr. and Florence Pugh. The film opened in North America July 21st with one-day-early preview screenings in numerous locales July 20th. The 5-perf 70mm prints of Oppenheimer featured Datasat audio and 2.20:1 full-frame imagery sourced from a mixture of Panavision Super 70 and 15-perf 65mm IMAX. The 15-perf IMAX 70mm prints of Oppenheimer featured IMAX 6-track audio and a variable aspect ratio sourced from a mixture of 5-perf 65mm (2.20:1) and 15-perf 65mm (1.43:1). During the release of Oppenheimer, Universal circulated 5-perf 70mm coming-attraction trailers for The Exorcist: Believer and The Holdovers. No trailers circulated for the 15-perf IMAX presentations. (During the January 2024 re-issue/return runs, some presentations included a trailer for the re-issue of Tenet.) The cited presentations are 5-perf 70mm except for those denoted as IMAX 70mm. The duration (measured in weeks) is cited in parenthesis following each cinema name.
