The Ziegfeld, built in 1969 was New York City's last huge single screen
movie theater and held more world premieres in recent decades than any movie
theater outside of Los Angeles. The theater was the beloved movie showcase
for mainstream blockbusters including new 70mm films like
"Interstellar", and restored
70mm classics like "Lawrence of Arabia", "Spartacus",
"Vertigo", and "My Fair Lady".

Not being able to compete with the
same movies being shown at nearby multiplexes and with less revenue due to
Hollywood studios' cutbacks on gala movie premieres, the Ziegfeld closed
January 28, 2016 and will be gutted to be the Ziegfeld Ballroom. The last
"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" shows were sold out with movie fans who
wished to say goodbye to the Ziegfeld.
