On a recent visit to Berlin,
my wife and I passed the Delphi-Filmpalast am Zoo Kino in Kantstraße close
to the Berlin Zoo train station. Delphi-Filmpalast am Zoo Kino is a classic cinema
from 1949, and still kept in mint
condition by the Yorck cinema Group. Yorck also runs the Kino International
close to Alexanderplatz and Cinema Paris nearby and many more in Berlin.
In July 2023
"Oppenheimer" was shown reel-to-reel in 70mm. In February Martin
Scorsese visited the Delphi-Filmpalast am Zoo Kino during the 2024 Berlinale Film Festival.

For 25 years years I have known Mr. Ingolf
Vonau who is the projectionist at the Delphi. Some readers might remember
him from the stories about the DDR 70mm process
DEFA 70.
We decided to go in and see if Ingolf was there that evening. And sure
enough a few moment later he came down the stairs to say hello. Ingolf was
busy, and as we did not want to take his time, and instead we agreed I
should come back two days later for a tour.

Two days later I came back late in the afternoon, and met with Ingolf who
kindly opened the doors the cinema so I could take some pictures of this
magic place. He gave me the grand tour to the projection room as well. A
"holy" place with two DP75 machines and a digital projector. Like stepping
30 years back in time. Film posters on the wall, and Kodak 35mm film cores
nicely organized on a shelf. The rewind table with 70mm reels and the
splicer. Rolls of old Todd-AO footage, with a certain smell in rusty cans.
Dimmed light and cables and film "things" everywhere. On the steps leading
up to projection a 70mm film print was waiting to be shipped.

The speaker system is a Dolby System with 5 front channels, capable of
presenting the old 70mm mixes on film or digital system. The amplifier
system is a QSC Q-SYS network based sound system. The curved wall-to-wall
screen is 14,5 meters wide, and has a height of 6,6 meters for 70mm. Seating
an audience of up to 673 people, it is one of Germany's biggest independent
screens. On the facade the "publikum" is welcomed with two big white neon
signs with big letters spelling "DELPHI". It looks really good. Delphi-Filmpalast
am Zoo Kino is still a great place to watch films and a place which is
appreciated by its "stammpublikum".
The Delphi is a must-see for anyone interested in cinemas. A very fine
classic cinema in the heart of Berlin. A big large-format Thank You
to Ingolf for his hospitality.
