Written by: Mark Trompeteler, in70mm.com, UK Date: 05.02.2024
Following a dormant period for the International Moving Image Society (IMIS), and after some restructuring and streamlining, the beginning of 2024 has seen The Society being re-activated.

The first event for UK based members was a technical visit to London’s BBC Earth Experience which featured 70 Digital Cinema Projectors, 24 LED screens, 20 servers and the narration of Society Honorary Fellow Sir David Attenborough.

A number of widescreen aficionados, both in the UK and overseas have already re-joined. One of the benefits of membership is access to the IMIS/BKSTS online archive portal, which nicely supplements the fantastic in70mm archive. This archive features every paper and article ever printed in IMIS/BKSTS journals right back to 1931. Every technical aspect of widescreen, large format, 3D, and all associated cinema and moving picture technologies can be searched for, downloaded, read and enjoyed. In addition paying members get sent a print copy of the quarterly “Cinema Technology” magazine, amongst a number of other benefits.

Associate Membership of IMIS is just £40 per year. Full Membership is restricted to those employed within the moving image industries and attracts the use of post nominal letters. Applicants for Associate level, who if never employed within these industries but can corroborate an association / interest / enthusiasm / commitment to the moving image industries, through brief correspondence with the Membership Secretary, are warmly invited to apply.

In the planning stages at the moment are a live webinar from Pinewood on Trends & Developments in Digital Motion Picture Cameras and workflow, a screening of a new feature film for members, their families and guests, inputs on motion capture and virtual production as well as other webinars aimed at the international membership.
