Terence Davies Begins Rolling 65mm Cameras on Peter Mullan-Led ‘Sunset
Song’. Here’s one that got started a bit under the radar: Terence Davies is
reported — first by the Hurricane Films Twitter account, then through
ScreenDaily — to be in New Zealand for the production of his next feature,
Sunset Song, which pairs the English legend (most recently of The Deep Blue
Sea) with Peter Mullan, Agyness Deyn (the Pusher remake), and Kevin Guthrie
(Sunshine on Leith). Let it be relayed, first and foremost, that Hurricane
Films’s tweet proudly promoted use of the Arri 65, a 65mm-film camera that
is expected to “ensure depth, clarity and emotional impact on the screen” —
regardless of how apparent these may have already been in the man’s past
efforts.
ARRI Rental:
SUNSET SONG - Michael McDonough, ASC, combines the ALEXA XT and ARRI/ZEISS
Master Anamorphic lenses with the ARRIFLEX 765 65mm film camera on Terence
Davies' epic new film.
Based on the 1932 novel by Lewis Grassic Gibbon, Sunset Song tells the story
of Chris Guthrie, a young woman growing up in rural north-east Scotland
during the early years of the 20th century. Adapted for the screen and
directed by Terence Davies, whose previous credits include Distant Voices,
Still Lives and The Deep Blue Sea, it was shot by cinematographer Michael
McDonough, ASC, known for his work on Winter's Bone, Albert Nobbs and
Starred Up. With support and equipment from the ARRI Rental Group, Sunset
Song utilized an ARRIFLEX 765 to shoot exteriors on 65mm film, and an ALEXA
XT Studio with ARRI/ZEISS Master Anamorphic lenses to capture studio scenes
in ARRIRAW. McDonough recently spoke with ARRI Rental about his experiences
combining these two high-quality formats on one shoot.
