Widescreen Weekend 2017 will take place between 12–15 October 2017.
Weekend 2017 once again celebrates the joys of large format
film making in many guises. Cinerama pioneers
Dave Strohmaier
and Randy Gitsch
return to our shores once more and enable us to screen their final
digital restoration of the
historic 3-panel Cinemiracle travelogue
"Windjammer", showing on Pictureville’s deeply
curved, louvered Cinerama screen.
THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF THE BROTHERS GRIMM
Experience the grandeur, majesty and pure fantasy of the famous Brothers
Grimm and their tales in the world’s only known surviving 3-panel print.
With everything from invisible cloaks to elves and dragons, the film
features re-enactments of three stories—The Dancing Princess, The
Cobbler, and The Elves and the Singing Bone—to create an all-singing,
all-dancing film for the whole family!
WINDJAMMER:
THE VOYAGE OF THE CHRISTIAN RADICH (New Restoration)
Come on board this magnificent Norwegian square-rigger as it takes a
spectacular 17,500-mile journey, manned by a crew of young
sailors-in-training—all photographed in the widescreen splendour of
Cinemiracle. Now digitally restored fully from the original 6 perf
3-panel elements, this classic is reborn: the colour, the music, the
true artistry more vivid than ever. Embarking from Norway, the ship sets
sail across the Atlantic, with storm-tossed stops in Madeira, Curacao,
Puerto Rico, and Trinidad. By the time they arrive in New York, the
Cinemiracle cameras offer a kaleidoscopic treat of colour and sound,
including exciting underwater shots of frogmen and a submerged US
submarine. Seen digitally, the picture hasn't looked and sounded so good
since its original theatrical release, over 50 years ago. Sponsored by
Cinerama, Inc. This screening will be introduced by Cinerama's
Restoration Team, David Strohmaier and Randy Gitsch.

Widescreen Weekend is proud to
welcome the acclaimed British film historian, documentary-maker,
filmmaker, and author
Kevin
Brownlow, who will be taking us through his incredible 50-year journey
to restore Abel Gance’s five-and-a-half hour silent masterpiece
"Napoléon". The event will be accompanied by a
screening of Napoléon’s famous triptych sequence, showcasing one the
film’s most innovative techniques and one of the earliest uses of
widescreen.
