Join us September 28th - October 4th at
Hollywood's Historic CINERAMA Dome to celebrate Cinerama's 60th Anniversary!
For the FIRST & ONLY time for one SPECTACULAR WEEK we will be playing twelve
classic Cinerama productions. Select titles will be presented in the
original 3 strip Cinerama process and additional titles will be digitally
projected, re-mastered from the original negatives.
All of the films will be presented in the Dome, one of only three theatres
in the world capable of projecting in 3 strip Cinerama. Specially designed
to project Cinerama, the Dome features a giant, 126-degree curved screen
that immerses audiences in the picture. Made of 316 hexagons and pentagons,
the Dome is the only concrete geodesic dome in the world. Starting off the
series in the WORLD PREMIERE of "In the Picture",
the first film photographed in 3 strip Cinerama in 50 years!
Extra: "In the Picture"
in 3 strip CINERAMA, New York premiere and breakdown reel. 192 minutes
11.08.2012: Update on "Seven Wonders" for the fans;
Due to the negative scanning problems encountered the digital restoration of
"Seven Wonders of the World" will be shown at the
Cinerama Dome in a work in progress form. This will involve a temporary
composite image (3 Cinerama panels in one widescreen frame) for most of the
film. Some of the film towards the end will be in the digitally restored
form. There is also the possibility that act-2 may be shown from an original
faded Cinerama pink print just as the showing of Search For Paradise.
11:00
pm "Holiday in Spain"
(1961) Digital presentation remastered from 65mm negative. 118 minutes
Thanks to Anders Olsson who discovered this
amazing trip
Google Street View now lets you "walk around" virtually inside the Cinerama
Dome. Locate the Cinerama Dome on Google Maps. It's at 6360 Sunset
Boulevard, Los Angeles, California. Drop the pegman on the street outside
and adjust your position so that you're right outside the Cinerama Dome,
facing its entrance. (The location will actually be shown as 6369 Sunset
Boulevard.) When in the right spot, you'll see three arrows in the street,
one of which is a double arrow pointing at the Dome's entrance. Click on the
double arrow (or use the up arrow key on your keyboard) and you're on your
way in.
While inside, you may notice the two display cabinets at each side of the
lobby filled with Cinerama artefacts and posters for the 60th Anniversary.
...and from Randy Gitsch, The Cinerama Restoration Crew:
Go to Google. Click on Maps. Enter "Cinerama Dome, Sunset Boulevard, Los
Angeles, California". Zoom in on the closest map view directly over the red
"A" finder spot. When you're as close as you can go, drag the little Street
View "pegman" icon to a position on Sunset directly across from the front
doors of the Cinerama Dome and directly opposite the red "A" finder spot.
Rotate your Street View until you are facing the front doors of the Cinerama
Dome squarely.
Notice the double arrow pointing toward those front doors. Click on the
arrows once...you will approach the doors...and they will open. Click once
again...you are now inside the Cinerama Dome's lobby. Click once again and
purchase your popcorn, or that box of Skittles to your left.
Click once on the back arrow. Now, by clicking on the left or right arrow's,
you may approach and enter the theater auditorium from either side ramp. One
click up either side ramp, be sure to turn around and notice the wall
display cases filled with original Cinerama ad art, cameras, lenses,
three-panel clapsticks, etc.. Once you're in the theater you can remain in
the orchestra level or go up to the mezzanine.
You can reach most seats. Find your seat, turn and view the screen from your
vantage point. You can not get closer than the 6th row from the screen.
Colors in different areas of theater are somewhat tweaky due apparently to
the Google capture. Nonetheless...Amazing! It's my favorite theater. And
regularly, monthly, the No. 1 or 2 highest-grossing theater complex in the
U.S.A.. Enjoy the Cinerama Film Festival here, Sept. 28-Oct. 4.
