Köln Weisshaus (»)
  Closed.

I'm probably the last projectionist, who operated at least one of the two DP70s in Weisshaus Theatre, Cologne, Germany, as it should be,- as real 70mm machines! These two machines where still in good working order in 1968, when I used them, (unfortunately daily as 35mm machines only.) Lamp houses have been Philips HI 85, carbon arc 85 A. In 1968 at Weisshaus Cinema I received a 70mm commercial spot (cigarettes) which had to be shown 3 times per day. So I converted one DP70 to 70mm and kept this modification for weeks, using as change-over-couple for the main program the second one, together with the as well installed Philips FP56. I still remember the story of that commercial: it was a heli-flight between the skyscrapers in Manhattan.

I felt a bit sorry, when I read, that these brilliant machines have been scrapped. The original building, with its great inner architecture (stall and floor) is still there.

In these days, all residues of cinematographic times in WEISSHAUS CINEMA COLOGNE are removed and the owner converts the house into an giant gym-hall with training machines on two storeys.

I entered the construction area one evening, seeing that a 2. floor has been set up in the former auditorium, but the rest of the decoration surrounding the stage + screen still existed.

Kind regards from Cologne, Hans-L. Wißkirchen

München BMW Museum
One DP70. Cinema from around 1973 until 2004. Cinema closed.

The DP70 in the BMW-Museum in Munich is no longer there. When they renovated the museum from 2004-2008 they decided to destroy the cinema in order to make the fantastic room structure of the museum bowl visible again. No more movies are shown there, but a 360 degree animation. Unfortunately I have no Idea what happened to the projectors. They might even still be in the possession of BMW.

The cinema was not in the original designs of the architect Prof. Karl Schwanzer in the early 1970’s and wasn’t even there when the museum opened. Schwanzer wanted to have a surrounding movie on the outer walls of the museum bowl, but couldn’t find a reliable technical solution for such a projection. For about half a year they had an endless loop of a motorcyclist, projected with a projector of unknown origin that was mounted on a revolving platform.

Only about half a year after the original opening in 1973 BMW decided to build a cinema on the top platform in the museum bowl. This was used for shows during opening times, but also for presentations and special screenings.

Even though I understand that they had to demolish the cinema for the new design of the museum since I am an architect myself I have to note that many people in Munich miss it. Its not only the petrol heads amongst the museum visitors, but the theatre was technically well equipped and the screen played an important roll for shows of the “Filmfest München”.

Yours,
Dipl. Ing. Florian Rohwetter

2010 update: I was told by an BMW employee that the projector was gutted in 2004 when the renovation started. As far as she knew BMW tried to sell it, but since no one wanted it, it was gutted. She explained that the costs of storing and preserving the projector for possible future use would have been too high. Florian
