February the 17th, 2003, the two original prototype DP70 machines are enjoying their new home at freshly
remodelled
Todd-AO Stage 2, at 900 N. Seward Street, after serving faithfully and
honourably for 47 years on Stage A at 1021, N. Seward Street. The historically significant projectors will be used to view optical effects as they come from the lab and to screen the completed films after the reels have been re-recorded (dubbed). |

The 1021 building has just (2003) been sold to Hollywood General Studios, adjacent to the original Todd-AO building.
It is my understanding that three original machines were sent to the US at approximately the same time from Philips; two came to Todd-AO Stage A to work in sound dubbing, and one went to the American Optical Co. for display purposes. Again, that is merely my understanding; I was not aboard at that
time so I cannot presume to provide first-hand information on the subject.

The two DP70 projectors installed at Todd-AO Studios #1 (SN
1741 and 1744) were originally
installed in the S/S France as
indicated, but were destined to be
scrapped when the ship was retrofitted as the SS Norway in
Bremerhaven Germany. The projectors
narrowly escaped the crusher and were salvaged by
Stephen Woolley and Mark Engebretson who recognized
the value of these magnificent
two-motored machines. The DP70s were crated and shipped to
their Van Nuys, CA office, cleaned and re-sold to
Todd-AO in 1980 or 1981.

when it arrived at Todd-AO nothing was done improve it. It
was just used as a full-sized model for designing sprockets
and pad rollers for the 2.5 perf format. It had been
stripped for parts long before Todd-AO got it. If that
machine was a horse, it would be a kindness to put it out of
its misery. Machine moved to United Artists Theatre Corp. storage

they contain modified Kinoton RSSD readers for analog and

feeding a custom Q-Sys install and Dolby Cat. 360 NR units.
Each machine has variable speed 16-30 fps. Refurbished
strong ultra 80 lamps with new reflectors and new LP and

magazines were modified to take film to and from a platter

Second Week of "The Master" in 70mm
01.09.2012:
(2082+2083) were bought new for the Century 21 in San
Jose. They were bought used from Century 21 and installed in
side 1 after the twining in 1981. These are the newer single
motor drive with the clutch to change from 24/30 fs. The two
now in side 2 (1375+1376) were purchased from a closed
theatre in Phoenix in 1985 for the expansion satellite
screens (3 & 4) in 1985. One was installed for a time in
side 3 but it was found that the floor was not up to holding
the weight. A DP75 replaced the DP70 in side 3 and
eventually the two DP70 replaced a pair of Century JJ's in
side 2. These are the older two motor drive. One of the JJ
is at the Orinda theatre in Orinda California and the other
at the Presidio theatre in San Francisco.

We have 70 mm capabilities on 3 of the 4 screens. A pair of
Norelco AA's (DP70) in sides 1 & in side 2 (plus a Christie
AW3 in both) and a single DP75 in side 3. I have the 70 mm
kits for all 5 machines. I was able to keep the pair of AA's
in side 1 when we added a pair of Christie CP2220's 2k
projectors. We do static 2 projector 3D. One machine shows
the left eye and the other the right. We use static circular
polarizers and the projectors run at the normal 2D flash
rate. Side 2 is currently film only but will have to lose
one of the AA's to make room for a digital machine. Will
keep one of the AA's. Side 3 I was able to keep the DP75 and
removed a Century C to make room for a pair of Christie
CP2000-ZX's. The digital was added 3 years ago to side 3 and
2 years ago to side 1.

1242 seats. "Oklahoma!" premiered
16.02.1956 and stayed until end of December 1956. Replaced
by "Around the World in 80 Days". Now
known as United Artists Coronet. Fully restored, there was
grand re-opening of the Coronet 18.12.1992 with "Toys"

The CORONET theatre stayed open a year longer than
originally planned. It closed in June
2005. The last movie was
"Million Dollar Baby".
The projection equipment was removed about a
week after the place closed. I'd
heard (but can't confirm) that it was sold to someone from
Dolby Laboratories. The CORONET still had some components of
the original TODD-AO sound system that were "retired in
place" in the booth . The original surround speakers were
still up in the ceiling.

The
CORONET "Booth Phone".
It has an 8 position "dial" on the
front which is marked with other locations
in the theatre such as "Box Office"
"Manager" , "Concession" "Lobby""Backstage" etc. To work it,
you moved the dial to the location you wanted
to talk to and pressed a button on
the side which buzzed that extension.

The exact serial numbers of what's in the National now, DP70 wise, now: On the left, as you face the screen, s/n 2215. I don't know what machine number the assigned it, but it was probably "#1". On the right, as you face the screen, is s/n # 2216, and they would have, typically, called it #2. 25.10.2007 Paul Rayton. |
